Broc Feeney reigns supreme amid wild weather, traffic chaos
Triple Eight star scores Saturday pole double at Queensland Raceway
Feeney to share front row with Will Brown, Ryan Wood on Saturday
Broc Feeney has put one hand on the Repco Sprint Cup with a stunning double pole performance at the Century Batteries Ipswich Super 440 amid traffic chaos and wild weather.
The Triple Eight Race Engineering driver nailed the fastest time in the first session, before setting the quickest time in the second session before rainfall dictated terms.
Feeney will share the front row with teammate Will Brown and Ryan Wood for Saturday's two 120km sprints, with several leading contenders jumbled throughout the field.
Notably, Cam Waters was 11th and fifth, while Matt Payne was only good enough for 18th and 11th. Triple Eight wildcard Zach Bates qualified 21st and 13th, while Matt Stone Racing's Cameron Crick was 25th twice.
"You could see [rain] coming all session," said Feeney, who leads Brown by 220 points.
"Will was backing up trying to get a tow, and I was like, 'Man I hope that doesn't bite us,' and it probably worked well because I saw everyone go off at Turn 1, and took it easy.
"But then my thing was pretty good, I raced GT here in the wet only about a month ago and Turn 3 was still pretty dry, and I felt like I made a bit of time there, so I knew that was the lap that was going to count.
"We went back out on wets, and literally I was like 30% throttle spinning out up the straight, so it was pretty dangerous but also good to get a little bit of a feel out there.
"I'm stoked, it's probably the slowest pole lap I've ever done in my life, but pretty stoked to get it."
Race 23 qualifying
Feeney kicked off Q1 with a 1:09.0137s, and improved to a 1:08.5900s on his second push lap. Brown slotted into second, with Wood third ahead of the impressive Jaxon Evans.
As cars returned for their second runs, an almighty gaggle of cars came together on the run to Turn 3, with Waters hitting the rear of Kai Allen's Penrite Ford.
As drivers found space, Cameron Hill immediately soared to fourth with a 1:09.8799s, before Feeney asserted himself at the top of the field with a 1:08.1886s, which was nearly 0.3s clear of Brown.
Rookies Allen, Cooper Murray and Aaron Cameron sailed into Q2, with Waters missing out in 11th by 0.0142s. Payne, meanwhile, was only 18th, with James Golding rounding out the field. James Courtney, meanwhike, will start his 600th race from 12th.
Feeney carried on his merry way with a 1:08.2754s in the opening stages of Q2, with Murray 0.3584s behind in second. Through the opening runs, Feeney was comfortable ahead of Murray, with Wood, Anton De Pasquale, Brown, Cameron, Chaz Mostert, Allen, Brodie Kostecki and Hill completing the 10.
Feeney went marginally faster with a 1:08.2736s, with Brown 0.1846s. Cameron improved to third and pressed on, with Feeney and Brown lowering their times to lock out the front row ahead of Wood and Mostert. De Pasquale, Murray, Kostecki, Allen, Cameron and Hill rounded out the top 10.
Race 24 qualifying
Fitted with Super Soft tyres for Race 24 qualifying, Feeney immediately laid down a 1:08.9030s for the field to chase, with De Pasquale just 0.014s behind.
On his second push lap, Wood flew to the top with a 1:08.7569s, with Feeney and Brown within 0.1s of the #2 Mobil 1 Truck Assist Ford Mustang. Waters was fifth behind De Pasquale, with Thomas Randle, Payne, Mostert, Nick Percat and Allen the provisional top 10.
Teams learned their lesson from the earlier session, with drivers quickly finding fresh air as they aiming to record two push laps. Feeney, though, caught Courtney, yet still managed to set a 1:08.6960s to claim top spot.
De Pasquale jumped ahead with a 1:08.6839s, and while times improved through the field, the likes of Payne, Murray, Kostecki, Cameron, Allen and Hill were unable to repeat their earlier heroics. Courtney was last of all, with the field covered by 0.680s.
Drivers hit the track for Q2 as clouds darkened over Queensland Raceway, with the Tickford Racing and Walkinshaw Andretti United Fords muscling past Feeney and Brown through Turn 1.
On dry tyres, drivers tried to beat the rain, but Waters and Randle fired off at Turn 1, and Mostert at Turn 6.
Rain quickly lashed the circuit as drivers battled for grip, with Feeney (1:19.8014s) leading Wood (1:20.2796s), Brown (1:20.7111s) and Stanaway (1:21.7100s). As conditions worsened, Mostert and Randle flew off the road twice, and Brown spun exiting Turn 4.
Try as they might, no driver was unable to find time amid rainfall to prevent Feeney clinching a 12th pole of the season by nearly 0.5s, and second in as many attempts on Saturday.
Supercars return to the track for Race 23 (12:45pm AEST) and Race 24 (4:10pm AEST).
