Chaz Mostert, James Golding, Cameron Hill cop post-race penalties
Mostert clashed with Will Brown, Hill with fellow Canberran Zach Bates
Golding penalised after colliding with Matt Payne on lap 1
Chaz Mostert, James Golding and Cameron Hill are all set to receive post-race penalties following the dramatic Saturday leg of the Melbourne SuperSprint.
Saturday's race was incident-packed from start to finish, with Matt Payne colliding with Golding, whose Blanchard Racing Team teammate Aaron Cameron also clashed with Will Brown.
Reigning champion Mostert crossed the line fifth, but is set to be reclassified to sixth behind Anton De Pasquale after receiving a five-second penalty over his own clash with Brown.
Mostert hit the rear of Brown's Red Bull Ampol Ford at Turn 9, which sent the 2024 Supercars champion across the infield. Brown rejoined, and emerged in a three-wide scenario with Jack Le Brocq and Cooper Murray.
Brown, Le Brocq and Murray were all cleared over their incident.
Mostert was found to have gained a lasting advantage, per the stewards report: "The Stewards after viewing the Judicial Camera footage and hearing from the DSA, the Authorised Representatives and the Drivers are satisfied that Car 1 following Car 888 into Turn 9 without sufficient overlap collided with the rear of Car 888 pushing Car 888 off circuit and gaining a lasting advantage The Stewards impose a 5 second Time Penalty on Car 1, a penalty consistent with previous penalties of a similar nature."
Two lap 1 incidents were also reviewed, with Hill and Golding also set to be penalised.
Brad Jones Racing driver Hill went down the inside of Matt Stone Racing rookie Zach Bates, who tipped Jayden Ojeda's PremiAir Racing Camaro into a spin. Hill crossed the line eighth, but dropped to 17th in the final classification after receiving a 15-second penalty.
The report reads: "Upon the start of the Race, Car 10 and Car 31 were ahead of Car 14 as they approached Turn 1 with Car 31 on the outside of Car 10. Car 14 attempted a pass inside Car 10 when there was insufficient room and collided with the right rear of Car 10, pushing Car 10 into Car 31 causing both Car 10 and Car 31 to leave the track. The Stewards impose a 15 seconds Time Penalty on Car 14 which is consistent with penalties imposed in similar incidents and is fair and reasonable in all the circumstances."
The Golding/Payne incident was the most dramatic in terms of the championship, with erstwhile championship leader Payne forced out on lap 1.
Both Fords were damaged after a squeeze exiting Turn 1. While Payne retired, Golding rejoined and finished 19th ahead of teammate Cameron and Brown.
Golding has since had 30 seconds applied to his race finish time, putting him behind Cameron.
The report reads: "As Car 7 and Car 19 went through Turn 2 on Lap 1, Car 7 on the inside moved out, leaving insufficient room for Car 19, causing Car 19 to hit the wall and retire. The Time Penalty of 30 seconds is imposed on Car 7 and is consistent with penalties imposed in similar previous incidents and is fair and reasonable."
The 2026 Melbourne SuperSprint concludes with Race 7 at 10:10am.
