Aaron Cameron sheds light on terrifying fire incident
Blanchard Racing Team driver walks away from fiery Ford
Incident triggered the first Safety Car of a wild race
Aaron Cameron has shed light on his terrifying fire ordeal at Sandown, which turned the Semi Final opener on its head.
Cameron pulled his fiery Ford over on the run to Turn 4, triggering the first Shannons Safety Car of the race.
It allowed officials to put out the flames, which were suspected to have been triggered by either a fuel leak or a PDM (power distribution module) failure.
"There was a fire in the cabin, so I stopped the car and I got out," Cameron smiled on the broadcast.
"Just had the smoke for a couple laps prior to that, but the fire only really started into [Turn] 1, so yeah.
"Saw there was fire, found some people with some fire extinguishers, pulled the car over and got out because I didn't really want to stay in there."
The incident set off a chain reaction, which saw Will Brown and Brodie Kostecki pick off Matt Payne for the lead.
Brown later spun challenging Kostecki for the lead, before an off for Jackson Walls triggered another Safety Car. Brown then turned around Cameron Hill, earning a penalty.
BRT is now facing a major overnight rebuild, with Cameron delivering a typically dry assessment of how he escaped the wild inferno.
"You've just got to get out. My driver changes are not really that fast usually for enduros, so that was pretty much as fast as I could get out," Cameron said.
"Then I was trying to remember which buttons to hit on the outside for the fire extinguishers and other things, so hopefully we can get it fixed and ready for tomorrow."
