Aaron Cameron escaped scary fire early in Sandown opener
Cameron clashed with Jack Le Brocq, exhaust damaged on #3 Ford
BRT will attempt to repair Cameron's damaged Ford trackside
The Blanchard Racing Team will attempt to repair Aaron Cameron's damaged Ford trackside, after fire engulfed the #3 LIQUI MOLY BLAHST Mustang at Sandown.
Cameron was taken out of contention early in Saturday's Penrite Oil Sandown 500 opener, after his BRT Mustang caught alight as he rounded Turn 1.
The Victorian pulled the fiery Ford over near marshals at Turn 4, where they extinguished the flames. The incident triggered a Shannons Safety Car period, which tipped the race on its head.
On the broadcast, race engineer Daniel Veronese suspected either a fuel leak or a PDM (power distribution module) failure may have caused the fire.
Cameron clashed with Jack Le Brocq earlier in the race, which damaged the exhaust. Speaking with Supercars.com, BRT Team Manager Kate Harrington affirmed that exhaust damage was indeed the suspected cause of the blaze.
"A similar issue happened to us at Grand Prix earlier in the year," Harrington explained.
“We believe the exhaust side skirts with the contact with Le Brocq have just folded in, which has started a fire with the side skirt.
"So the tips have actually folded in onto the side skirt, and then the side skirt's obviously gone up, which has burnt the rear of the car, and the PDM and the rear quarter."
While the team is based out of nearby Box Hill, BRT is set to repair the car at Sandown, but Harrington admitted the extent of the damage is yet to be determined.
"The plan is obviously we'll try not to go back to base if we can avoid it," Harrington said.
"Most of the stuff we obviously have in the truck is here. We're just going to give it a decent clean now and then start pulling things apart and get right down to the extent of the damage.
"We'll do our best to try and fix it, but we probably won't know until we pull everything off and see what extent it is."
Boost Mobile Qualifying begins at 10:45am AEDT on Sunday.
