Chaz Mostert lauds officials after chicane crashes
James Golding, Aaron Cameron crashed at Beach Chicane
Drivers avoided further incident after official intervention
Chaz Mostert has praised officials for arresting a potentially dicey situation, after both Blanchard Racing Team Fords crashed in Race 31.
James Golding sent his #7 Dayco Ford into the barriers at the chicane in the closing stages of Saturday’s Gold Coast opener, which was won by Mostert.
Earlier, Golding’s teammate Aaron Cameron spun at the same corner, both Fords lying in perilous positions as cars approached.
Officials were quickly on the case, not only at the scene but well before the chicane, affording drivers the chance to slow and avoid further incident.
Save for some heart-stopping moments as the BRT Fords returned to the race, the action continued without further drama.
Remarkably, neither incident triggered the intervention of the Shannons Safety Car.
"I was just coming up on it, but the feedback I was getting from the team was awesome, like well and truly early,” Mostert told media.
"And then to be fair, the flag marshals, how early they say the yellows were in, before the Beach Chicane, was really, really good heads up.”
The race was held in wet conditions, putting drivers, teams and officials — as well as fans — to the test.
Mostert paid tribute to those controlling the scene, continuing: “We normally have a lot of flaggies that are volunteers on weekends, and some doing it first time or some not.
"But today, in those conditions, which is very hard, very dark, I feel like they did a fantastic job and braved the storm today.
"So thank you to all our officials, our volunteers and flaggies because that was probably the point that saved a crash there, was actually those people being on top of it today.”
