Broc Feeney claims brilliant pole for Race 26 in thrilling Shootout
Feeney denies Cameron Hill, MSR in action-packed one-lap dash
Race 26 to commence on Sunday at 1:45pm local/2:15pm AEST
The man of the moment continues to deliver in Supercars, with Broc Feeney denying Cameron Hill to claim a 14th pole position of the season at the AirTouch 500 at The Bend.
In a thrilling Boost Mobile Top Ten Shootout, Feeney emerged as the benchmark once again, going clear for the 14th time in 2025 and fifth in succession. It was a remarkable effort, given the #88 Red Bull Ampol Chevrolet rammed into the sister car just hours earlier.
The 22-year-old had a big lap to chase courtesy of Matt Stone Racing driver Hill, with provisional pole man Brodie Kostecki dragging himself into contention with a rapid second sector.
"It's fantastic, obviously stoked to do that," said Feeney, who joined Peter Brock, Allan Moffat, Dick Johnson and Scott McLaughlin in claiming five consecutive pole positions.
"I knew yesterday with the times we were doing in the afternoon that it was going to have to be a big lap in the Shootout, so I was super happy with the lap.
"There's a couple of little things where you go, 'Man, I wonder if I could've got a little bit more,' because I knew Brodie was going to do a good lap and a good job, but we've been super strong in the last sector and it saved us there.
"I'm absolutely stoked, it's been an up and down day, but absolutely stoked to get my first pole in the enduros."
In just his fourth career Top Ten Shootout appearance, Cooper Murray set a 1:49.8663s for his rivals to chase. Anton De Pasquale, a two-time pole winner at The Bend with DJR in 2021, lit up the time sheets to put 0.579s on the Erebus Motorsport rookie's time.
Two-time Bend pole winner Chaz Mostert went next, but wound up nearly 0.4s off De Pasquale as the sun continued to set around Tailem Bend.
Payne reset the fastest time in Sector 1, and after running ran line astern through the second sector, nailed Sector 3 to move 0.154s clear of De Pasquale.
Two years after taking his maiden Supercars pole at The Bend, Randle set about making it pole No. 2 at the circuit. Chasing Payne's 1:49.130s, the Tickford driver flew through the final two sectors to set up a brilliant 1:48.9341s.
In response, Matt Stone Racing driver Cameron Hill pulled a 1:48.7571s from nowhere, leaving Wood, Waters, Feeney and Kostecki with a mountain to climb.
Wood went fastest through Sector 1, but failed to catch a slide into the triple-apex Turn 8 and fired off the road.
Waters went next, and ran with Hill through the opening two sectors. However, the Tickford star could only split Hill and teammate Hill, leaving Feeney and Kostecki between MSR and a shock pole position.
Feeney jumped ahead in Sector 1, but was down through Sector 2. With a sterling Sector 3 effort, Feeney jumped ahead with a 1:48.6548s.
Kostecki was down at Sector 1, but stunned in Sector 2 to set up a grandstand finish. Try as he might, Kostecki was not only unable to dislodge Feeney, but fell short of Hill.
Supercars return to the track on Sunday for a 20-minute Warm Up at 9:30am local/10:00am AEST, before the 500km, 102-lap Race 26 commences at 1:45pm local/2:15pm AEST.
