Thomas Randle reveals NASCAR cameo interest
Tickford driver was trackside at last weekend’s NASCAR race in Richmond
Randle sits 10th in Supercars standings heading to enduros
A flying visit to the United States has given Thomas Randle a taste of NASCAR, and the Supercars driver is keen to give it a crack.
The Tickford Racing driver flew to the United States to join RFK Racing at Richmond Raceway just days after the Supercars round in Ipswich.
Randle is backed by Castrol, which also carries naming rights on owner-driver Brad Keselowski’s #6 Ford Mustang in the Cup Series.
Supercars drivers have made a splash in NASCAR in recent years, headlined by Shane van Gisbergen’s exploits.
Randle’s Tickford teammate Cam Waters, Supercars champions Brodie Kostecki and Will Brown, as well as Jack Perkins, have made starts in all three tiers of NASCAR. Supercars champion Will Brown, and Supercars co-driver Jack Perkins have also made cameos.
Speaking to media at Richmond, Randle said a cameo would be “amazing,” but cited the financial hurdles required to overcome.
Brown recently revealed he had to raise over $500,000 in sponsorship to make his start in Chicago, which was cut short just three laps into the race. The Triple Eight star will make an Xfinity Series start in Portland next weekend.
“I’ve watched so many NASCAR races. To actually be here, the schedules have aligned and allowed us to come to this race,” said Randle, who recently re-signed with Tickford through the end of 2027.
“I’ve been trying to get to the States for a few years. It’s nice to have finally made it happen and the fact that obviously there’s a Castrol connection is great.
“If any of the RFK guys or girls come to Australia, we’ll look after them too. It definitely goes both ways.”
Randle is among the versatile drivers on the grid, starting out in open wheelers and recently racing GT3 machinery. He is also a noted steerer of his 750-plus horsepower SAAB Sports Sedan.
There is one more road course race remaining on the 2025 Cup Series calendar, at the Charlotte Roval, just one week before the Repco Bathurst 1000.
Asked if he would like to contest the upcoming Charlotte Roval race, the 2020 Super2 champion said: “That would be amazing, but it doesn’t work like that.
“The cars cost a lot of money to run, so you need the car, the crew, and the backing financially. So, we’ll see. To do a road course would be pretty cool.
“There have been a few Supercars drivers [race in NASCAR]. Obviously Shane is now full-time in the series with Trackhouse. He’s come from the Supercars Championship.
“There are a few that have done some races and are going to do a few more.
“Whether we can add our name to the list of doing a race would be amazing. There are just a lot of things that the stars have to align to make that a reality.”
Randle sits 10th in the standings, and will combine with James Moffat for the Ryco Enduro Cup with the AirTouch 500 at The Bend on September 12-14.
