Will Brown's season unravels in Sandown shocker
Triple Eight star spins out, then spins out Cameron Hill
Brown led, before spinning battling Brodie Kostecki
It was a Sandown Saturday to forget for Broc Feeney and Will Brown, with Red Bull Ampol Racing staring down the barrel of a shock double elimination on Sunday.
Brown, the 2024 Supercars champion, emerged in the race lead after a dramatic opening pit sequence, triggered by a fire in Aaron Cameron’s Ford.
Brown fought for all his worth to hang onto the race lead from there, going into battle with Brodie Kostecki, Cam Waters and Matt Payne.
On lap 36, Kostecki rounded up Brown, who attacked the #17 Shell V-Power Ford into Turn 4. Instead, Brown tipped himself into a spin, and dropped to last.
To make matters worse, Brown — in trying to claw his way back through the field — tipped Cameron Hill into a spin, again at Turn 4, and incurred a 15-second penalty.
Over team radio, after his spin while fighting Kostecki, Brown apologised to his team, which also has Broc Feeney chasing a Grand Final position.
Brown entered the 2026 Repco Supercars Finals Series ranked third, following a Ryco Enduro Cup victory. A slump on Gold Coast Sunday dropped him to fifth.
The Queenslander held the cards on Saturday, qualifying ahead of Feeney, and crucially holding track position in the intra-team Red Bull Ampol battle.
Feeney dropped to eighth as Brown restarted in the lead, before the latter fell back into the clutches of former teammate Kostecki, who went on to win the race.
Feeney's dramatic fall continued late on, the #88 Ford classified 11th. Brown dropped to 20th after the post-race penalties were applied.
It ensures Feeney heads into Sunday just one point ahead of Waters, with Brown 88 points from the Finals cut-line.
