Seven into four won't go.
That's the underlying story of the Penrite Oil Sandown 500, which will set the field for the season-ending bp Adelaide Grand Final, where the 2026 champion will be crowned.
Ryan Wood, Kai Allen and Jack Le Brocq were eliminated at the Gold Coast, where Matt Payne only just retained top spot over Sunday winner Broc Feeney.
The 'win and you're in' rule powered Chaz Mostert through, with the reigning champion launching from eighth pre-round to fourth for Sandown.
As it stands, 2024 champion Will Brown, Tickford Racing star Cam Waters and Chevrolet spearhead Anton De Pasquale are the three drivers on the outside looking in.
The top seven are covered by 102 points, with Payne and Feeney enjoying healthy gaps to the cut-line. Behind them meanwhile, a win is the minimum for each driver to progress, it's tight.
Brodie Kostecki, who didn't even make Sandown last year, is 30 points clear of his former teammate Brown, who also jumped from fifth into the top four last year.
Track action at Sandown commences on Friday November 6.
