Peter Xiberras enlists Declan Fraser for grassroots enduro
PremiAir driver, owner to be joined by Elliot Barbour, Christopher Xiberras
Event to be held this weekend before Ipswich Super 440 on August 21-23
PremiAir Racing team owner Peter Xiberras is set to switch from boss to teammate at Sandown this weekend.
Xiberras, himself a champion drag racer, has dabbled in circuit racing in the recent past, making a start in the Bathurst 6 Hour production car race over Easter, and taking ownership of a historic Group A Holden VK Commodore.
Now, Xiberras is set to team up with Declan Fraser, Apex Hunters United co-host and Trans Am regular Elliot Barbour, and son Christopher Xiberras in a grassroots enduro event at Sandown.
The foursome will compete at the Great Sandown Showdown, run under the Motor Events Racing banner for cars that are valued at less than $5000, with a gentleman's code of strictly no contact.
Barbour ran in Xiberras' Group A Commodore at the recent Winton Festival of Speed, and impressed the PremiAir owner sufficiently to be welcomed back for the Sandown enduro.
Xiberras is looking forward to the relaxed environment: “This is one of those events that takes racing back to basics. We will have one car, four drivers and one goal: to keep it running and complete as many laps as we can.
“Declan is obviously used to racing at the highest level in Supercars, while Elliot showed at Winton that he certainly knows how to get on with the job when someone hands him the keys.
“It will also be great to have Christopher in the car with us. We will all be competitive once the helmets go on, but the main purpose is to enjoy the experience, work together and have some fun at one of Australia’s most iconic circuits.”
Fraser, meanwhile, is also looking forward to a light-hearted weekend before he gets back into Supercars mode the following weekend for the final round of the Repco Sprint Cup in Ipswich.
“I’m excited to be teaming up with Pete, Chris and Elliot; it’s going to be a great weekend and a lot of fun before heading to QR next weekend,” Fraser said.
“The first thing we need to focus on is making it through the long weekend. Looking after the car and managing traffic will be important, especially with different classes out on track. Hopefully we can come away from the weekend with a trophy.”
Supercars action in Ipswich begins on Friday, August 21.
