Kai Allen dominates wild Darwin Saturday
Penrite Racing pulled right strategic reigns for rising star
Unwell Brodie Kostecki required medical attention after finishing third
Penrite Racing have pulled off a strategic masterclass to hand Kai Allen his second win of 2026 at the betr Darwin Triple Crown.
The 20-year-old benefitted from a call to short fill at his first of two compulsory pit stops, and put the hammer down in what was arguably the drive of his career.
Allen, who has debuted a new car this weekend, was untouchable in the second half of the race, romping away to a win of more than eight and a half seconds as Cam Waters and an unwell Brodie Kostecki battled for second late.
Waters was able to convert his pole position to an early lead, however all eyes were on Matt Payne in third, as the #19 Ford jumped well before the lights went out.
A five second penalty was inevitable, and the Kiwi quickly dispatched Brodie Kostecki on the second lap with a power move at Turn 1 as he worked to minimise the damage.
Damage took out Ryan Wood early, the #2 Mobil 1 Truck Assist Toyota bumping into Declan Fraser and causing a power steering failure on lap 5.
That triggered a chain reaction of failures that culminated in a water pump failure, with Wood pulling back into the garage to retire, but not after pouring out the contents of the water pump all over the circuit.
Every car bar one managed to avoid the slick racing line at Turn 5 the next time by, and in a cruel twist of irony it was teammate Mostert who was caught out, dropping back from fourth to 14th as he fired off.
Payne pitted early on lap 19 to clear his five seconds, and lit up the timing screens on his fresh tyres, with Waters responding to cover the undercut on lap 25.
As Waters exited pit lane, Payne ranged up with a full head of steam as the Monster Mustang weaved, then made a final diagonal move to cover to the inside.
Payne immediately protested over the radio: "Bro, that is so dangerous coming out and weaving like that."
Waters was belatedly handed a bad sportsmanship flag for moving under brakes, as Payne faded to fall behind teammate Kai Allen on lap 37, before having his rear bar rattled on by Brodie Kostecki.
Allen was on a tear in the second stint, having taken on less fuel than those ahead of him, and was soon hounding the back of Waters for the lead as the #6 Ford began to struggle for tyre life.
Such was the pressure, that Waters ran wide at Turn 7 on lap 41, and that was all the invitation Allen needed to sweep into the lead and drive away, with a gap needing to be built with a longer final stop ahead.
Kostecki also got by Payne moments later, launching a big move at the final corner and rattling his way by the rapidly fading Kiwi, who had lost touch with the leaders.
With such a struggle on his hands, Payne was the first of the leading four to make their final stop on lap 44, though Kostecki was able to easily cover off two laps later.
Waters then pitted on lap 47 to try and regain the lead, however even with a long final stop, Allen had managed to build a three second buffer by the time he'd got back up to speed after his final stop on lap 48.
With eight laps remaining Waters found himself under siege from Brodie Kostecki, who tried to launch a move down the inside at Turn 5, all the while bringing Payne closer into the battle.
With four laps to go, Kostecki pulled back from Waters to cool his tyres for one final charge, whilst the margin back to Payne continued to crush down.
However, the battle for second never eventuated, Waters crossing the line 8.6 seconds clear of Waters, with a brave Kostecki rounding out the podium despite battling illness and a drinks system issue, the 2023 champion requiring attention after he arrived back in pit lane.
Payne secured fourth, ahead of Will Brown, Mostert in a brilliant recovery drive in his 400th start, Broc Feeney, Anton De Pasquale, Jack Le Brocq, and Jayden Ojeda.
The final day of the betr Darwin Triple Crown begins with Boost Mobile Qualifying at 10:45am local time/11:15am AEST.
