Double disaster for Walkinshaw TWG Racing in Darwin
Contact takes Ryan Wood out, Chaz Mostert caught out in early laps
Wood suffered failure after collision with Declan Fraser
Walkinshaw TWG Racing has been struck down by a cruel dose of double disaster in Saturday’s Darwin race.
A suspected power steering issue fired Ryan Wood off the road at Turn 1, forcing the #2 Mobil 1 Truck Assist Toyota into the garage.
Seconds later, teammate Chaz Mostert — in his 400th Supercars race — fired off the road at Turn 5, dropping from fourth to 14th.
It was a brutal start to the race for the Toyota homologation squad, which entered Saturday with Wood seventh and Mostert 10th in points.
Wood started the day 206 points clear of the Finals cut-line, while Mostert was an extended 96 points clear of 11th placed Jack Le Brocq.
It seemed as though it was the latest reliability issue for Walkinshaw TWG Racing, with Wood a high profile retirement from the Christchurch finale due to an engine issue.
However, it was later revealed that Wood’s car had sustained damage over a clash with PremiAir Racing driver Declan Fraser.
"It's pretty frustrating battling for 13th, felt like the world championships with old Decca," Wood said on the broadcast.
"I felt like we were pretty good in those first couple of laps, car felt really good, it's just frustrating but it is what it is. Story of our day today, seems like Mozzie's ending up slipping on all our stuff. Sorry to that side and sorry to our team, it's real gutting.
"That's what happens when you're racing in that mid-pack."
