Jackson Walls claims first career pole in Ipswich
Sydneysider becomes first Super2 driver to set a 1:08s at Queensland Raceway
Triple Eight's first Super2 pole since Adelaide 2022
Jackson Walls has secured his first career pole position in the Dunlop Super2 Series with another record-breaking lap in Boost Mobile Qualifying.
A late red flag led to a two-lap shootout at the end of the session, and it wasn't until well after the chequered flag flew that the Sydneysider set a 1:08.9303 to deny local star Nash Morris.
Walls became the first ever Super2 driver to dip into the 1:08s bracket at Queensland Raceway, putting 0.1326s on Morris, with Lochie Dalton and Rylan Gray making it three Tickford entries in the top four.
"Just shocked, really. I could've done it before the red flag, but I wasn't doing a good enough job," Walls said.
"I kept making the same mistake at the last corner, and I finally did it on the last lap. The delta was wrong on the dash, I thought I didn't have it.
"These guys put in so much work behind the scenes, they work harder than anyone else, really. This pole position's a bit too late for them, but one's better than none."
The opening runs were an indication of what was to come, with Walls heading the field on a 1:09.4573, with Dalton just 0.083 seconds behind.
Bailey Sweeny continued his strong form to sit third after the first run, with Race 1 winner Gray in fourth, ahead of Reuben Goodall and Brad Vaughan.
Campbell Logan ran long at Turn 6 and toured through the gravel, whilst Cameron McLeod also had an off at Turn 3 after skating into the braking zone.
Sweeny and Walls would both break the qualifying lap record as they began their second runs, with Sweeny's 1:09.1955 pipped by Walls' 1:09.1630.
Gray would then ride his luck to set a 1:09.0983 a split second before the red flags flew due to Max Geoghegan's car shutting down after hitting the kerb at Turn 1.
Dalton leapt to second with his first lap after the red flag, whilst Cameron McLeod also leapt up to third following a tough day yesterday.
Dalton then went faster still with a 1:09.0789 and looked set to secure his third pole of the year, before Morris set a 1:09.0629 as he aimed to secure a pole on home turf.
However, Walls ensured that he would claim Triple Eight's first Super2 pole since Declan Fraser at Adelaide in 2022, as he looks to close the gap to the four Tickford entries leading the points series.
McLeod will line up fifth on the grid this afternoon, ahead of Sweeny, Vaughan, Cody Burcher, Matt Hillyer, and Campbell Logan.
The final race of Round 4 for the Dunlop Super2 Series will begin at 12:25pm AEST.
