Matt Stone Racing announce signing of Tommy Smith to Super2 program
Smith to join Ayrton Hodson in ex-Triple Eight Commodores
23-year-old tested with MSR in December
Matt Stone Racing have locked down the next driver in their revived Super2 program for 2026.
Following confirmation of Kiwi Ayrton Hodson's signing last month, the team have today confirmed the signing of 23-year-old Tommy Smith.
Smith, who drove an ex-Triple Eight Commodore at an MSR evaluation day last month with rising female star Alice Buckley, brings a variety of global motorsport experience with him into the development series.
The nephew of former Supercars full-timer Jack Smith ran in FIA Formula 3 in 2023 and 2024, scoring a best finish of fourth at Silverstone in 2024, and switched to IndyCar's feeder series Indy NXT last year.
Smith also has a start at the famed Macau Grand Prix, and has recorded a podium finish in the Formula Regional Oceania series in New Zealand.
Thransitioned to tin tops late last year, contesting the final three rounds of last year's Trans Am Series, and has shifted his career focus towards a ride in the Repco Supercars Championship.
“I’m incredibly excited to be joining Matt Stone Racing for the 2026 Super2 season,” Smith said.
“The team’s history of supporting young drivers speaks for itself, and I’m grateful for the opportunity and the belief Matt and the team have shown in me.”
Team owner Stone added: “Matt Stone Racing has a proud history as a development pathway, and we’re excited to be returning to our roots by investing in young, talented drivers like Tommy.
“Tommy’s experience has given him a level of maturity beyond his years. We see great potential in him, and Super2 is the ideal environment for him to continue his progression within our program.”
In a team release, it was teased that more announcements will be coming 'in due course,' leaving the door ajar for the highly-touted Buckley to make her Super2 debut with the team.
The 2026 Dunlop Super2 Series and Repco Supercars Championship will commence at the Sydney 500 from February 20-22.
