Shane van Gisbergen has topped Practice 2 at the VALO Adelaide 500, breaking the practice record in process.

Van Gisbergen and Thomas Randle — who topped Thursday practice — both dipped below the previous record.

The duo went below Chaz Mostert’s 1:19.241s lap set in Friday practice in 2020.

The #97 Holden and #55 Ford were split by just 0.03s, with Cam Waters third.

Waters survived a major scare late in the session when he scraped the wall at Turn 11.

The #6 Monster Ford escaped with little more than paint damage on driver’s right.

"I was on a really good lap, I just kept attacking," said Waters, who predicted he was on a 1:19.05s lap.

"It's practice, I wanted to find what the limits were.

Waters inches from disaster at Turn 11

"I went a little bit hard, I got loose and it spat me into the wall."

Times dramatically tumbled after David Reynolds opened proceedings with a 1:20.462s.

Mark Winterbottom lowered the marker to a 1:20.145s, before Anton De Pasquale set a 1:19.814s.

De Pasquale, Broc Feeney (1:19.959s) and Randle (1:19.968s) were first into the 1:19s.

Waters — who went off early at Turn 14 — slotted into second with consecutive fast laps.

With 16 minutes remaining, Scott Pye put his Team 18 Commodore into top spot with a 1:19.504s.

It would prove good enough for sixth as the times continued to fall.

With 13 minutes left, Randle proved his Thursday speed was no fluke with a 1:19.232s.

It took just 47 minutes of track action for the lap record to fall on what is a largely resurfaced track.

Waters pushed hard to unseat his teammate, and dropped in just 0.02s behind.

The Tickford spearhead went on with it, but nearly came to grief at the fast right-hander.

Champion-elect van Gisbergen kept it together and went fastest of all with a 1:19.199s, 0.04s faster than Mostert's 2020 record.

The top 21 drivers were covered by just 0.97s ahead of Race 33 qualifying.

Feeney and Will Davison were fourth and fifth, with Mostert, De Pasquale, James Golding and Andre Heimgartner rounding out the top 10.

Cars will roll out for 15-minute ARMOR ALL Qualifying at 5:35pm local time on Friday.

The quickest 10 drivers will partake in Saturday's Top Ten Shootout, which will finalise the Race 33 grid.
