How van Gisbergen can wrap up the 2021 title today
A finish of sixth on Sunday will do for Shane van Gisbergen in his quest to clinch a second Supercars crown.
Van Gisbergen placed on hand on the 2021 Repco Supercars Championship with a brilliant Sydney win on Saturday.
Red Bull Ampol Racing teammate Jamie Whincup is the only driver who can displace van Gisbergen in 2021.
Van Gisbergen has been the form driver in 2021, with his Race 29 victory his 14th of the season.
Finishing sixth on Sunday should be of little concern for van Gisbergen, who has finished sixth or higher on 26 occasions from 29 starts in 2021.
Van Gisbergen has also beaten Whincup to the chequered flag in 20 of 29 races this season.
Saturday's race was one of the Kiwi's best, with van Gisbergen carving through the field on Super Soft tyres as rain hit SMSP.
Van Gisbergen could also clinch the title should the race be abandoned. The race was suspended due to inclement weather.
"I was protecting my soft tyres early at the start and it paid off because we had to put them back on later in the race,” explained van Gisbergen, who helped Red Bull Ampol Racing win the 2021 teams' title.
"My car was awesome on the hard tyres, but I had to double stack in the pit stop which put us a long way back in the pack.
"I was in a bit of trouble, but I managed to come through with a heap of speed, and in the end I’m not sure where we would have ended up, but the rain came, and it really hurt the hard tyres more than the soft tyres.
"The battle was epic out there today, and to get a team one-two was awesome.”
The 2021 Repco Supercars Championship and Dunlop Series seasons will conclude at the Repco Bathurst 1000.
Every session of the event will be broadcast live on Foxtel (Fox Sports 506) and streamed on Kayo.
