Brown 'thought a wall was coming' in wild spin

Erebus Motorsport driver Will Brown was awaiting a wall during his wild first-corner spin in the Beaurepaires Sydney SuperNight finale.

The #9 Coca-Cola Camaro was sent into a fast spin after a four-abreast situation sent Brown into the Turn 1 gravel.

Brown was far right of a four-car melee of Mark Winterbottom, David Reynolds and Anton De Pasquale off the line.

The Erebus Motorsport Chevrolet was clipped and sent around, with Reynolds also delayed as both cars ran off the track.

Nursing a damaged car, Brown fought back to 14th after dropping to 25th and last after just one corner. However, given the speeds the cars were travelling, Brown thought he was set for a worse fate.

“I was just looking for a wall, I thought a wall was coming,” he told Supercars Trackside.

“It stalled the motor, I did a few 360s, then dropped the clutch and kept going and got it through the gravel.

“I was quite lucky to be honest. We had a bad pit stop due to having a bit of steering down — to come 14th, I’m pretty happy to get back there.

“It was wild. I thought I got a good enough start to get around these three, and our left mirror is different, and it wasn’t going to work.

“It was a racing incident, no one’s fault. Just unfortunate, but luckily I was able to get through the gravel and keep going.”

Critically, Brown dropped from 14 to 41 points behind teammate Brodie Kostecki, who faded to eighth after encountering clutch and tyre life issues.

Regardless, points for 14th was a far greater outcome versus zero, with Brown losing the championship lead to Kostecki in Saturday’s night race.

However, Red Bull Ampol Racing clawed back ground thanks to a win for Shane van Gisbergen, with Broc Feeney fourth.

Kostecki, Brown, van Gisbergen and Feeney are covered by just 67 points heading to next month’s OTR SuperSprint. Erebus leads Triple Eight by 80 points in the teams' standings.

“I thought I did enough to get past [Reynolds] but obviously it wasn’t,” Brown continued.

“There was nowhere to go. By the time you get to that point, I couldn’t back out, I couldn’t keep going, I was just a bystander."

The 2023 Repco Supercars Championship will resume at the OTR SuperSprint on August 18-20.
