Super2 graduates Brodie Kostecki and Broc Feeney both endorse Top Five Shootout
One-lap shootout set to decide Boost Mobile Pole Award for first time in Super2 Series history
First-ever Boost Mobile Top Five Shootout to be held on Sunday morning in Tasmania
Former Dunlop Super2 Series stars Brodie Kostecki and Broc Feeney have welcomed the introduction of the Boost Mobile Top Five Shootout for Round 2 of the 2025 season in Tasmania.
For the first time in the 25-year history of the Super2 Series, the front of the grid for Race 4 of the year on Sunday will be decided by a one-lap qualifying run.
A staple of qualifying in the Repco Supercars Championship, the usual Top Ten Shootout has been slashed in half for the Dunlop Super2 Series, placing an even higher emphasis on performing in the first phase of Boost Mobile Qualifying.
Kostecki and Feeney both reacted to the introduction of the Top Five Shootout for Super2 on the latest episode of Supercars' Driver's Only podcast, where the pair were joined by Jaxon Evans of Brad Jones Racing.
It's the high-pressure stakes that has 2023 Supercars champion Kostecki especially keen for Sunday morning in Tasmania, with the Dick Johnson Racing star reminiscing on his early days in the category.
"I reckon that's going to be really cool," said Kostecki, a six-time race winner in the Dunlop Series.
"When it was my first two years in Super2, I was a nervous wreck. I don't know why, but you're putting everything you've got, your whole life, into racing.
"It was hard enough in qualifying with a 30-minute qualifying session, now these guys have got to go out for a Top Five Shootout.
"I reckon the three of us will be sitting on the pit wall having a look."
Equally as excited as the 2024 Bathurst 1000 winner was 2021 Super2 Series champion Feeney, who has spent time with current Triple Eight Super2 duo Ben Gomersall and Jackson Walls at a recent test day.
The 2023 Sandown 500 winner believes that the cooler temperatures expected in Tasmania, combined with the lengthened warm-up procedure of the Hard tyre used in Super2, could provide a real challenge to the five drivers tackling the shootout.
"Top Five Shootout, I'm pumped! Oh man it's going to be so exciting," said the Triple Eight young gun.
"We do three laps on a Super Soft to get it up to temp. We had a test day last week with our Super2 guys, and I went out to help, and at [Queensland Raceway] it takes three, four laps until they're doing their fastest.
"At Tassie, imagine tipping into Turn 1 on a Hard. I'm actually really excited, I can't wait. It's gonna be good."
Just 15 points cover the top three in the standings following the opening round at Sydney, with Jordyn Sinni leading the way for Eggleston Motorsport after claiming his first race and round wins.
Race 1 winner Cameron McLeod sits just six points behind in his Kelly Racing Mustang, whilst Gomersall impressed on debut, and enters Tasmania in third.
Round 2 of the 2025 Dunlop Super2 Series takes place at the Snowy River Caravans Tasmania Super 440 from May 9-11. Tickets for the event are on sale now.
