Toyota Supercars project covered in upcoming documentary
Toyota will join the Repco Supercars Championship in 2026
Docuseries to premiere in 2026 ahead of first race of new season
Toyota's journey to Supercars is the subject of a documentary series, which will be released ahead of the brand's entry into the category.
First announced in September 2024, Toyota will join the Repco Supercars Championship in 2026.
In the 12 months since the initial announcement, Toyota revealed Walkinshaw Andretti United as its homologation team, signed Brad Jones Racing, and has undertaken a major car and engine project.
The entire journey has been documented in a behind-the-scenes series, titled Creating the GR Supra Supercar. The documentary is being produced by AirTime Media, in conjunction with Toyota and Walkinshaw Andretti United.
Toyota released a teaser trailer of the documentary, which features interviews from Toyota's Sean Hanley, Liam Ferguson and Nicolas Hogios, along with WAU CEO Bruce Stewart.
"This is a very special time for Toyota in Australia. It's been decades in the making," Hanley quips in the trailer.
Design lead Hogios adds: "The lines of the Supra are already very aggressive and very beautiful and distinctively Toyota, but to see it as a race car is just gonna be on another level.
"The way it looks like it's moving, even when it's standing still is just awesome."
In recent weeks, Toyota has teased the engine and body of its new Gen3 GR Supra, which will be formally unveiled on September 1 in Sydney.
The current shape will be then tested on a prototype following the launch, before a Supra joins a Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro in the United States for wind tunnel testing in December.
Beyond a full-scale clay model revealed in Bathurst last year, renders and the teasers, little has been seen or heard of the car. However, fans can expect to see the full story with the documentary.
Further broadcast details of the documentary will be released in due course.
The 2025 Repco Supercars Championship resumes at the AirTouch 500 at The Bend from September 12-14, and the Repco Bathurst 1000 from October 9-12. Tickets are on sale now.
