Ryan Wood struck down by heartbreaking failure in Ruapuna finale
Long-time Jason Richards Trophy leader caught out by mystery issue
Broc Feeney inherits Jason Richards Trophy victory after late drama
Jason Richards Trophy leader Ryan Wood has been struck down by a heartbreaking issue late in the ITM Christchurch Super 440 finale.
The Walkinshaw TWG Racing driver led the Jason Richards Trophy points from the moment he took victory in the Taupō finale, and was in the box seat heading into Sunday.
Wood held seventh with a handful of laps remaining in Race 13, and with it, was in control of the Richards Trophy.
However, the #2 Mobil 1 Truck Assist Toyota slowed on the pit straight with seven laps to go, putting Wood out of the race and the Jason Richards Trophy out of the hands of the Kiwi.
The Shannons Safety Car was deployed, setting up a dramatic three-lap dash to the finish.
Brodie Kostecki and Broc Feeney were tied on points, with Feeney on track to win on countback. Kostecki tried to pass Chaz Mostert, with a dramatic collision sending Kostecki through the grass.
Mostert was quickly slapped with a 30-second penalty.
When asked what happened to the Wood Supra, engineer Richard Harris replied: "No, something's obviously gone on prior with the engine I believem could see he was chasing the throttle.
"I don't have any understanding with what's gone on."
Feeney won the Richards Trophy courtesy of the chaos, with Matt Payne winning the race.
