Ferrari F1 Grand Prix winner declares Supercars interest
Rubens Barrichello one day wants to drive a Supercar at Mount Panorama
Barrichello entered 326 F1 races between 1993 and 2011
Former Ferrari Formula 1 ace Rubens Barrichello has declared that he harbours ambitions to one day drive a Supercar at Mount Panorama.
The 53-year-old Brazilian needs little introduction, having been an 11-time Grand Prix winner across a career spanning 322 starts. Most notably, he played foil to Michael Schumacher during the German's remarkable run of five straight titles for Ferrari.
However, since retiring from F1 after 2011, Barrichello has since continued racing in his native Brazil, becoming a two-time champion of the Stock Car Pro Series, a V8-based category with similarities to Supercars.
Barrichello was on hand at Bathurst last month watching his son Eduardo make his Meguiar's Bathurst 12 Hour debut at the wheel of a Bronze class Mercedes.
Brazil have already had some representation in Supercars in years gone by, with the likes of former Penske CART/IndyCar teammates Helio Castroneves and the late Gil de Ferran, as well as 2025 Bathurst 12 Hour winner Augusto Farfus all competing in the international Gold Coast 600 format.
However, one name stands out above the rest, Max Wilson, who drove full-time between 2002 and 2007 in the championship, securing a round podium in the 2003 finale at Eastern Creek for Dick Johnson Racing.
Indeed, Wilson's involvement in the series was the hook for Barichello, who admits that his stock car career has got him even more interested in the championship.
"I've always been a fan of the series,” Barrichello told Supercars.com.
“I had one of my best friends, Max Wilson, racing the Supercars for such a long time.
“It's quite interesting how close it is to stock car racing in Brazil, and some of my friends from Australia already went to Brazil to race in that series."
Notably, that list of drivers includes 2025 Supercars champion Mark Winterbottom, who contested season-opening endurance races in Brazil in the 2010's, including recording a runner-up finish in 2015.
Wilson meanwhile, having joined Supercars following stints as Williams F1 test driver and a race seat in CART alongside Castroneves and de Ferran, also became a Brazilian Stock Car champion in 2010.
The Mountain has already made it's mark on Barrichello, who having beeb a long-time viewer of the 1000 on global broadcasts, has now been able to tick off a bucket list item.
“The race is amazing,” Barrichello said of Bathurst.
"It's just an amazing race to watch. So many good fights, it’s so entertaining, pure racing.”
When asked if he'd like to drive a Supercar, Barrichello said, smiling: "I mean, it's something that I should have done already.
“If I get an invitation, I would definitely come to drive it, with pleasure."
The 2026 Supercars season resumes in Melbourne this weekend, where the new F1 season will also commence.
