Jamie Whincup handed the reins of a Gen3 Ford Supercar to Formula 1 rookie Arvid Lindblad at Goodwood — and the teenager had his hands full.
Whincup and Triple Eight are making a cameo at the Goodwood Festival of Speed with a Gen3 Mustang.
The seven-time Supercars champion handed the Ford over to Racing Bulls F1 driver Lindblad, who performed a series of burnouts in front of the large crowd.
During the demonstration, Lindblad was nearly hit by Ellen Lohr’s DTM-spec Mercedes-Benz C-Class. The two cars made gentle contact.
‘Arvid got [the engine] up to about 120 [degrees], so hopefully it keeps going,” Whincup joked.
It was Lindblad’s second swing in Gen3 machinery, after driving the 2023 Bathurst-winning Triple Eight-built Chevrolet Camaro at Highlands Motorsport Park last year.
“It was fun. Obviously quite different to what I’m used to driving with a roof,” the Briton said of the Supercar.
“It was fun. It’s such a great noise. It’s so loud. A lot of power. Sequential gearbox, so it’s quite cool to be able to pull the gears.
“I’m not very talented at doing doughnuts, it’s not really what I’ve been practising for the last 10 years, but there are a lot of people who are telling you you have to do it.”
Whincup and Lindblad delivered on the brief, Whincup adding: “The whole idea was to make some noise and get some smoke.”
The Red Bull Ampol-liveried Ford recently completed demonstration runs at the Austrian Grand Prix at the hands of 2024 Supercars champion Will Brown.
