Support emerges for new Wollongong street event
Supercars continuing push for new street race in NSW
New Perth street circuit event slated to open 2028 season
Support has emerged for Wollongong as the site of the next major Supercars street circuit event.
The Repco Supercars Championship is continuing a push for a new street race in New South Wales.
Wollongong and the Central Coast are among locations under consideration for a new event, which would bring thousands to regional NSW areas.
The City of Newcastle also recently confirmed its support for a return of Supercars to the Hunter Valley region.
The championship last raced on the streets of NSW in Newcastle in 2023, which followed an eight-year run on the streets of Sydney Olympic Park.
Published by The Daily Telegraph on Thursday, a new Wollongong circuit has been mooted to run along the Cliff Road foreshore and up to the Flagstaff Point Lighthouse.
Supercars currently races at blockbuster street circuit events in Townsville, Gold Coast and Adelaide, as well as the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne.
A Wollongong event has received supported from NSW State Parliament's Member for Wollongong, Paul Scully, who wrote: “This could be a fantastic opportunity for Wollongong and should be thoroughly examined.
“Cities should look to have a diverse range of events and attractions.
“An event like this would support more tourism, boost local jobs and has the potential to make a multi-million injection into the local economy.”
In a statement, Supercars Chief Executive James Warburton said growing interest in the championship makes it the “perfect” time to explore a new street circuit event in NSW.

"We have a great partnership with Destination NSW and with their support, we run some fantastic events in the state, the iconic Bathurst 1000, the Bathurst 12 Hour and the Sydney 500,” Warburton said.
"We're working closely together to put a New South Wales street race back on the calendar with some options which would be extraordinary.
"You see the enormous impact of street races to communities around the country, like Adelaide, the Gold Coast and Melbourne. We want to do this for New South Wales.
"The Newcastle 500 added $36-40 million to the local economy each year, drawing crowds up to 190,000 over three days.
"The great momentum and growing interest in Supercars and motorsport in general make this the perfect time to revive a street race.”
NSW currently hosts two Supercars events, opening the 2026 season at Sydney Motorsport Park before the showpiece Repco Bathurst 1000 on October 8-11.
Supercars also operates the Meguiar’s Bathurst 12 Hour, which broke new ground last month with record crowds.
The 2026 Supercars season resumes at inaugural ITM New Zealand Double Header, which begins at Taupō from April 10-12. Tickets for the event are on sale now.
