Cam Waters chasing first win since 2025 Sydney 500
Tickford Racing star currently on 38-race winless streak
Consistent start has Waters only 28 points from series lead
It has been a strong start to 2026 for Cam Waters, but the Tickford Racing star isn't keen on being the 2026 season's bridesmaid for any longer.
Waters is the only driver to have finished every race in the top 10 so far this year, and sits just 28 points from the championship lead despite going winless.
In a strange campaign, Waters hasn’t qualified in the top five yet this year, but has finished no worse than sixth and has gained 39 positions across seven races.
Per Supercars data analyst Scott Sinclair, Waters has made gains in race trim year-on-year, improving his tyre degradation from being ranked 23rd last season to 14th so far this season.
Along with teammate Thomas Randle, Waters has led Tickford to an unlikely teams' championship lead. However, despite being in the mix for the points lead, Waters to end his 38-race winless streak.
For what it's worth, Waters is on the second-longest winless streak of his Supercars career since his first win at the 2017 Sandown 500, which preceded a 94-race streak before The Bend 2020.
"Excited to be heading across the ditch for the double header and get back amongst the New Zealand fans this week,” said Waters, who is set to move into a new car after New Zealand.
"The break has been a good chance to refresh after what has been a busy start to the year.
"We find ourselves in a good position but I am still wanting more and we get a chance to do that with six races over the next two weeks aiming to be back on the top step.
"The team have done great to retain that pit lane priority in the number one garage and we are locked in making sure we leave NZ with that still being the case.”
The ITM NZ Double Header offers a different storyline for teammate Thomas Randle, who fresh off a Bathurst 6 Hour win, is determined to bounce into the top 10.
"This double header provides us a great opportunity to keep the momentum going following the podium on Sunday at AGP,” said Randle, who crashed out of the penultimate Melbourne race after clashing with Ryan Wood.
"We saw the effect of what a DNF does so early in the year at the last round, so we will be looking to execute six really strong races in this double header to get back in the top 10 of the drivers' championship.
"Very keen to get back to NZ in the Castrol Racing Gen3 Mustang. The tracks we have over the next couple of weeks should offer some really good racing.
"The NZ fans have always been great to us so to be on the ground kicking off a double header is very exciting and we can’t wait to put on a show for the fans here."
Track action in Taupō commences on Friday.
