Cam Waters will debut new Ford Mustang this weekend in Tasmania
Tickford star ranked second in qualifying and races in Gen3 era in Tasmania
Only Jayden Ojeda and Kai Allen have made more overtakes in 2026
Finding answers amid a long time between drinks has Cam Waters confident his qualifying woes are behind him.
After a five-week break, the 2026 Repco Supercars Championship launches back into life at this weekend’s Tyrepower Tasmania Super 440.
The Symmons Plains round comes at a good time for Waters, who has a strong qualifying and racing record at the Tasmanian circuit in recent years.
Waters is ranked second in qualifying and race averages between 2023 and 2025, notably winning the 2024 finale.
Sitting fourth, Waters is still chasing his first victory of the season. It’s the longest the Tickford Racing star has started a season winless since he waited until the penultimate race of 2020 to break through.
In contrast, he opened the 2023 and 2025 seasons with victory, needed 11 starts in 2021, 13 in 2022 and 10 in 2024.
“Really excited to head to Tassie. I really love driving around that joint,” Waters said at Winton.
"It’s not the longest track we go to, but it's super tight in qualifying, and always has really good racing.
"As a team, we've been pretty strong there in the past, so hopefully we can go there and get a few podiums, and hopefully crack that first win of the season."
Waters will debut a brand new Ford Mustang in Tasmania, in what is his team’s first in-house built Gen3 Supercar.
Qualifying, as it did in Sydney and Melbourne, let Waters down in New Zealand, where he dropped from second to fourth in the championship.
However, the month after New Zealand saw Tickford not only complete Waters’ new car, but spend ample time trying to work out why qualifying has been such an issue to date in 2026.
"New Zealand was probably a tougher couple of rounds for us than we would have liked,” Waters said.
"I think our race pace has been really good, like it has been all year, it's just qual has been a bit of an issue.
"The break after New Zealand's been really good for us to kind of work through that, and hopefully we have a few solutions for Tassie.”
Track action at Symmons Plains commences on Friday May 22.
