Cam Waters redeemed by stunning charge after "disaster" fears
Tickford Mustang started from pit lane after battery issue on grid
Waters charged from last to fifth in chaotic 200km race
When he needed a result most, Cam Waters emerged from a chaotic conclusion to the ITM Christchurch Super 440 with one of the drives of the season.
The Tickford Racing driver banked crucial points with fifth in Sunday’s Race 13, which was headlined by victory for Matt Payne, and a controversial clash between Chaz Mostert and Brodie Kostecki.
Come Ruapuna, Waters struggled to qualify in the top 10, but as was the trend through the first two rounds, managed to fight through and bring home points.
That seemed destined to end when Waters’ Monster Energy Ford was left stranded on the grid on Sunday, with a battery issue forcing Waters to abort his grid slot of eighth and start from pit lane.
A crash around the first lap saw Waters restart 18th, before he reeled off pass after pass to get into the top 10. When Ryan Wood’s Toyota gave up the ghost, Waters moved up again.
The Mostert/Kostecki incident promoted Waters to fifth, which was a remarkable result given how dire his situation was as his rivals commenced the formation lap.
“Qualified in the 10, started at eighth, went to fire the dog up to the start line and battery was flat,” Waters said in a social media video.
“Got a jump start, started from pit lane, so [went] back to last. Had a really speedy car and made my way back to fifth.
“Good to salvage some points out of that race, could have been a disaster. We'll move on to the next one and find some car speed.”
Waters heads to Tasmania fourth in the championship, 138 points behind new leader Broc Feeney.
Tickford is fourth in teams', just 32 points behind Walkinshaw TWG Racing.
