Cam Waters explains kangaroo test day encounter
Tickford star had a run-in with ‘roos under lights in Sydney
Waters ended up fifth fastest in Thursday session
Cam Waters has detailed how quick communications from his team helped the Tickford Racing star safely negate wildlife in Sydney.
After making their presence felt at the Meguiar’s Bathurst 12 Hour last weekend, kangaroos stole the show at Thursday’s Destination NSW Sydney Test Day.
The Thursday evening session was quickly suspended when a mob of kangaroos emerged trackside, and moved across the track at Turn 3.
Waters and Chaz Mostert were captured by photographer Jack Martin evading the ‘roos, with Waters — who grew up in regional Victoria — cleverly slowing his #6 Monster Energy Ford to a crawl to move the animals along.

"Yeah, it was a bit random,” Waters said of the ‘roo run-in post-session.
“The boys radioed in and said that there's a few kangaroos on the track, and first thing I thought of was Bathurst 12 Hour and Chris Mies.
“I thought, 'I'll back her off, make sure I don't hit one', and obviously there was heaps of them out there, so yeah, it was pretty funny.
“Maybe they saw another Mustang and was looking for me. But, I swerved at a few of 'em, got 'em off the track and we pressed on.”
It was a standout test for Waters, who ended up fifth on the time sheets behind pace setter James Golding. Sydney Motorsport Park was a happy hunting ground 12 months ago, with Waters winning all three races from pole position.
“It's awesome to be back here at SMP on the normal track,” the 18-time race winner said.
“We got some really good testing in tonight and the car's fast, we ran through what we wanted to, so hopefully it’s good for us for this weekend."
When asked about the Turn 8 works, which held up through Thursday's session, Waters said: “The track at Turn 8 was fine. So obviously a lot of question marks around it, if it was gonna hold up being so fresh.
“But it was fine, which was good and gripped up quite a lot through the session. So yeah, I think we'll be fine this weekend."
