James Golding fastest in final DNSW Sydney Test Day session
Golding's BRT Mustang pipped Broc Feeney by just over a tenth of a second
Final session briefly halted by group of rogue kangaroos
James Golding has finished the Destination NSW Sydney Test Day as the one to catch heading into the DUNLOP Sydney 500.
Heading into his first official weekend as a Blanchard Racing Team driver, the Victorian had the last laugh over Red Bull Ampol Racing star Broc Feeney, as they traded fastest lap times in the dying minutes.
It remained status quo at the top for much of the second half of the session, with Cam Waters remaining at the top of the pile, however Brodie Kostecki managed to go within 0.0074s of the benchmark to go ahead of Thomas Randle and split the Tickford 1-2.
Another notable name to shoot up towards the top of the timing was Andre Heimgartner, who put the R&J Batteries Supra up into fourth, just 0.1102s off Waters.
The session was briefly halted with just over an hour remaining, when a group of kangaroos got a little bit too close for comfort at Turn 3.
After the sesison went green, the intensity increased with 20 minutes remaining, the intensity began to heat up, with Golding putting the CoolDrive Mustang to the top of the pile on a 1:28.4088s.
Feeney nearly knocked over Golding's marker, but went second on a 1:28.4757s, before Anton De Pasquale slotted in behind on a 1:28.4979s, all three covered by just 0.0891s.
Feeney went again however, and with three and a half minutes remaining he put his Red Bull Ampol Mustang on top by 0.1030s with a 1:28.3058s.
However, Golding then responded on his final flyer with a purple first sector, and he finished the job to finish on top with a 1:28.1371s.
Will Brown also joined the party late in the piece, jumping to third on his final lap with a 1:28.3557s, just over two tenths behind Golding.
De Pasquale was the first of the Chevrolet's for Team 18 in fourth, followed by Waters, Kostecki, Randle, and Heimgartner.
Two rookies rounded out the top 10, namely Jayden Ojeda of PremiAir Racing, and Dick Johnson Racing's Rylan Gray. Reigning champion Chaz Mostert was 11th in his #1 Walkinshaw TWG Racing Toyota.
Kai Allen topped the mileage charts with 69 laps, with Feeney and Matt Stone Racing duo Zach Bates and Jack Le Brocq completing 68 laps each. Macauley Jones topped the mileage charts for Toyota with 59 laps completed.
With pre-season testing now finished, the stage is set for the season opening DUNLOP Sydney 500 that begins tomorrow.
