Chaz Mostert furious, Ryan Wood fastest in Adelaide qualifying shock
Kai Allen second, Broc Feeney third, Will Brown sixth in Race 33 qualifying
Mostert undone by kerb strikes, electrical issue, will start 12th
Chaz Mostert has been left fuming in a Boost Mobile Qualifying session of shocks at the bp Adelaide Grand Final, with Ryan Wood beating Kai Allen and Broc Feeney to provisional Race 33 pole.
Wood will be last man out for the Boost Mobile Top Ten Shootout, but an electrical drama in Q2 cost Walkinshaw Andretti United teammate Mostert a shot at the Shootout, putting the Ford star into 12th.
Blanchard Racing Team rookie Aaron Cameron stunned to fourth, with Anton De Pasquale, Will Brown, Matt Payne, Thomas Randle, Cooper Murray and Brodie Kostecki completing the top 10. Cam Waters, who paced both practice sessions, struggled for grip and qualified 21st.
After a Friday punctuated by rain, drivers were greeted with sunshine as Q1 began. Brown, Waters and Mostert immediately picked up a kerb strike at the Senna Chicane, with Murray fastest after the opening flyers with a 1:20.3941s.
Mostert recorded another kerb strike and Randle clipped the Turn 8 wall, before Payne jumped to the top with a 1:19.7572s. Mostert showed enough pace to jump out of the drop zone, but opted to pit with the rest of the field.
The entire field returned, and Randle fired to first with a 1:19.5457s ahead of Cameron and Payne. Mostert only jumped to 18th, but dropped into the knockout zone as times improved. As the times tumbled, Mostert delivered a clutch lap to jump to fourth, which became fifth as Wood clocked a Q1-best 1:19.2436s ahead of Murray, Feeney and Allen.
The biggest scalp was Waters, who ended up 21st and was eliminated with David Reynolds, Andre Heimgartner, Jaxon Evans, Will Davison, James Golding and wildcard Austin Cindric.
As Q2 went green, there were desperate scenes down at WAU, as Mostert's car failed to fire. Per Supercars rules, a car must start under its own power, putting pressure on Mostert to deliver once again.
Feeney lit up the time sheets with a 1:19.4948s ahead of Wood, De Pasquale, Randle and Fullwood, as Mostert remained in the lane. Murray moved the number to a 1:19.2016s as Mostert rolled out with five minutes remaining. Payne, Nick Percat, Kostecki, Jayden Ojeda and Jayden Le Brocq also hadn't set a lap.
Murray parked up as his 17 rivals tried to knock him out of the 10. Wood went fastest with a 1:19.1866s, with Mostert moving to fourth with a 1:19.3171s. The times tumbled again, Allen nailing a 1:18.9889s as Mostert dropped to 10th.
Wood launched to top spot, before a stunning 1:19.1162s from rising star Cameron bumped Mostert out of the top 10. Mostert himself was then unable to improve, and was left screaming over team radio after he crossed the line.
Saturday's action continues with the Boost Mobile Top Ten Shootout at 12:35pm local/1:05pm AEDT, before the 78-lap Race 33 at 3:20pm local/3:50pm AEDT.
