Broc Feeney beats David Reynolds to provisional pole as stars miss out
Feeney, Reynolds last drivers out for Boost Mobile Top Ten Shootout
Chaz Mostert 14th, Brodie Kostecki 15th in rollercoaster qualifying session
Championship leader Broc Feeney has scooped provisional Race 16 pole at the Bosch Power Tools Perth Super 440, as Chaz Mostert and Brodie Kostecki both failed to progress.
Feeney topped the two-part session by just 0.03s over a resurgent David Reynolds, with Matt Payne, Will Brown, Bryce Fullwood, Ryan Wood, Cam Waters, Cameron Hill, James Golding and Anton De Pasquale all progressing to the Shootout.
Mostert and Kostecki, meanwhile, missed out in 14th and 15th, with the former claiming Saturday's first pole position.
Drivers were back on the Dunlop Soft tyre for Sunday's action, with Boost Mobile Qualifying held under sunny skies at CARCO.com.au Raceway.
Feeney nailed a 55.1621s straight out of the gate in Q1, and went on with it to record a 54.7363s on his second push lap. Kai Allen was a surprise early pace-setter, going second on both of his opening laps.
Just before Aaron Cameron put his CoolDrive Ford on top with a 54.6736s, attention turned to Wood running off the road at Turn 7, with the Saturday winner only 24th after the opening runs.
As teams returned to the lane, Cameron led Feeney by 0.0727s, with Allen, Cooper Murray, James Courtney, Lochie Dalton, Brown, Payne, Richie Stanaway, Hill and Reynolds the provisional 10. Kostecki was 12th, Mostert 14th and Waters on the bubble in 18th.
Waters responded to go to the top with a 54.1733s, before Feeney reeled off a 54.0854s to jump to the top of the order. In a final flurry of times, Hill jumped to third, with Richie Stanaway, Will Davison, Macauley Jones, Andre Heimgartner, Allen, Jack Le Brocq and Jaxon Evans knocked out.
Birthday boy Heimgartner was placed under investigation over an alleged impeding incident with Cameron at the beginning of the final runs, with Cameron remonstrating over team radio after catching Heimgartner into Turn 7.
Feeney opened up in Q2 with a 54.4953s, ahead of Waters (54.6937s) and Brown (54.6940s). On green tyres, Reynolds fired to the top with a 54.2413s ahead of Percat (54.3597s), before Mostert fell just 0.0001s short in second.
Also on green tyres, De Pasquale was only 13th after his first lap, before improving to fourth. That became fifth once Fullwood dropped in a 54.1823s, with the provisional 10 completed by Reynolds, Mostert, Thomas Randle, De Pasquale, Percat, Feeney, Waters, Hill and Golding. Wood was 11th, and Brown 12th.
All drivers returned for a final shot at sealing a Shootout berth, and Waters fired the first shot with a 54.0341s. Reynolds responded with a 53.8628s, before Feeney hit the front with a 53.8300s.
Payne shot to third, while Ford rivals Mostert and Kostecki could only manage 14th and 15th. Brown loomed to go fastest of all, but aborted his lap and wound up fourth.
Randle was the unlucky driver in 11th, missing out by 0.0301s.
The Boost Mobile Top Ten Shootout, at 1:05pm local/3:05pm AEST, will set the grid for the 200km Race 16.
