Symmons Plains might be a venue that has thrown up some shock results, however only the best of the best have been able to truly unlock it's secrets.
Across the 98 championship races held at Symmons Plains, only 34 drivers have greeted the chequered flag first, of which half have only won a single race.
The top of the Launceston winners' list is a who's who of Australian touring car history, going to show just how tricky it is to find sustained success.
Ahead of the circuit's 100th ATCC/Supercars race this weekend, Supercars.com take a look at the drivers who made Symmons Plains their own throughout their careers.
4 wins
Dick Johnson, Mark Skaife
Kicking off in equal fifth are two of the sport's all-time greats, namely Dick Johnson and Mark Skaife. The Ford icon nailed down wins in Tasmania in three of his title-winning seasons, namely 1981, 1988, and 1989, and snared his final Tasmanian win in 1990. Skaife, meanwhile, won both heats in 1994 on the way to a title, before winning two out of three in 1999 as teammate Craig Lowndes missed the round due to injuries from his Calder Park rollover.
5 wins
Allan Moffat
The late Allan Moffat was the man at Symmons Plains in the early 1970s, with his all-conquering Mustang TransAm a devastating package. Moffat was unstoppable from 1971-73, the last of those wins coming in an XA Falcon under the Group C regulations, before he kicked off his memorable 1977 campaign with a sweep of both heats, uniquely run on a Saturday and Monday.
7 wins
Peter Brock, Garth Tander, Shane van Gisbergen
Three Holden legends share third on the list. Taking the fight to Moffat for the Lion, Brock won all five of his races in the Group C era from 1973-84, before a barren period followed as turbo cars dominated Group A. In the mid-2000s, Tander owned Symmons Plains, winning six of nine races between 2005-07, before adding a seventh in 2009. Van Gisbergen enjoyed a similarly fruitful period once he joined Triple Eight in 2016, clean sweeping the three-race 2022 round in his historic 21-win season.
10 wins
Craig Lowndes
Having driven for both the Holden Racing Team and Triple Eight at the peak of their powers, Craig Lowndes was always set to feature prominently on this list. He took the championship by storm in 1996, and won all three races on route to winning the title at his first attempt. After a year out in Formula 3000, he was back on the money in 1998, with two wins, before missing the 1999 round. Lowndes would have to wait until 2010 to get his next win in Tasmania, with his 10th and final win being the final solo win of his full-time career, before announcing his retirement mere months later.
13 wins
Jamie Whincup
Statistically the greatest Supercars driver of all-time, it's perhaps no surprise that given the dominance Triple Eight have enjoyed in Tasmania for the best part of two decades, Jamie Whincup tops the list. Between 2007 and 2021, Whincup won 13 of the 34 races held at Symmons Plains, highlighted by a clean sweep in 2011. 2012 played host to arguably his most famous win, as he spun early but still managed to win after his incredible near-miss. Having announced 2021 would be his swan song year from full-time driving, he added one final win to his Symmons Plains tally in the opening race of the weekend, extending his record. It's a record that looks set to remain for years to come.
What of the active drivers?
Of the 24 drivers set to tackle Symmons Plains, only five have crossed the line in first place. Broc Feeney is the most successful, having won three races, including two last year, with Triple Eight teammate Will Brown second with two wins from 2023. Chaz Mostert, Cam Waters, and Matt Payne all have one win apiece, the Kiwi having won the last race to be held in Tasmania last year.
