Rylan Gray provisionally claims second race win of 2025
Gray facing a post-race investigation for a Safety Car restart breach
Race marred by heavy crash involving Mason Kelly and Jarrod Hughes
Dunlop Super2 Series points leader Rylan Gray has provisionally claimed his second race win of the season in the opening race of Round 4, but faces a nervous wait with a post-race investigation.
Race Control have placed Gray under investigation for a restart infringement following a heavy second lap crash for Mason Kelly and Jarrod Hughes, with the investigation to be held post-race.
The #55 pulled away from Vaughan late to claim victory on road by 2.916 seconds, with Vaughan fending off late pressure from Bailey Sweeny to claim his second runner-up finish of the season.
Off pole position Brad Vaughan appeared to initially get the launch off the front row before bogging down in the second phase, allowing Rylan Gray to shoot to the lead from second at Turn 1.
"Pretty cool to get my second race win, my starts have been a weakness all year and I thought it was that race, but luckily Brad got a worse one," said Gray.
"I got to the lead, had a very long Safety Car, my arms were getting sore from weaving, but super pumped to get my second race win.
"It was hard, I was watching the clouds the whole race thinking it was going to rain. Lucky it didn't, but just had to put my head down on the restart and bring it home clean."
Bailey Sweeny got the best jump from the front two rows of the grid, and went side by side with Gray through Turn 2, before being squeezed wide and allowing Vaughan back up into second at Turn 3.
Turn 3 was the action zone again on Lap 2, when Mason Kelly speared into the side of Jarrod Hughes after taking to the grass with a locked inside front.
Both Kelly and Hughes climbed from their heavily damaged cars, with the Erebus Academy prospect being taken to Ipswich Hospital for precautionary x-rays on his left upper arm.
Two of Eggleston Motorsport's five Commodores didn't see the other side of the Safety Car either, with Bradi Owen diving into pit lane, and Elliott Cleary never making it out to the starting grid.
The race restarted with 10 and a half minutes remaining on Lap 14, with Vaughan eager to get going and rattling the rear bumper of Gray's Mustang.
Gray handled the pressure from Vaughan and set a lap record on the restart lap to put six tenths on Vaughan after the first lap back to green, though it would be Sweeny in third who re-set the record on the following lap.
Sweeny had to fend off late pressure himself to claim his first race podium in Super2, with Lochie Dalton attempting a crossover at Turn 6 in the dying laps but being unable to pull it off.
Super2 action continues tomorrow with Boost Mobile Qualifying at 9:45am AEST, before the final race of the weekend at 12:25pm AEST.
