McLaughlin reflects on dramatic Spa round

Scott McLaughlin has reflected on an up-and-down Round 5 of the BP Supercars All Stars Eseries at Spa as post-round investigations continue.

The Shell V-Power Racing driver’s second-place finish in the night’s opening event appeared to be in question due to a possible penalty, with more information to come.

Shane van Gisbergen and Anton De Pasquale similarly found themselves under a cloud, having crossed the line first and fifth respectively after a last-lap collision.

There was no doubt about McLaughlin’s podium in the Spa finale, taking third from Chaz Mostert on the final lap.

In between, the #17 Mustang driver had a torrid run in the reverse grid start, involved in a pair of incidents that left him to finish a lap down in 21st.

Initial championship calculations have van Gisbergen seizing the overall lead from McLaughlin by a single point, but confirmation of the official standings is still to come.

“That was a big night, I’m mentally drained. So sweaty!” McLaughlin said.

“I got a bit impatient there at the end with Mostert, but in the end he made a mistake and I took the position.

“That second race of the night was a bit of a mess, but overall wasn’t my best night and wasn’t my worst.

“All good, we’ll get set to go again next week.”

McLaughlin’s teammate Fabian Coulthard had an incident-marred night, with a best finish of 11th in the opening race.

“There was plenty of action tonight, and it feels like I’m always in it,” said Coulthard.

“Race pace is fine, but we’ve got to tune up qualifying and get out of the mid-pack. We just keep getting caught up in everyone else’s dramas.

“It was cool to have some battles with Lando [Norris, McLaren F1 driver], side-by-side through plenty of corners, nice and clean and fair.

“Now we’re heading back to the States for the next one!”

Round 6 of the BP Supercars All Stars Eseries will feature races at Circuit of the Americas and Sebring next Wednesday night.
