Super2 rookie Max Geoghegan to drive Kelly Racing Mustang in season finale
Geoghegan contested first five rounds in an Image Racing Commodore
Grandfather Ian "Pete" Geoghegan won several ATCC titles driving a Mustang
A Geoghegan is set to race a Mustang once again, as Max Geoghegan is set to cross the Holden/Ford divide for the final round of the 2025 Dunlop Super2 Series.
The Erebus Academy prospect will line up for Kelly Racing in the final two races of the season, stepping into the seat vacated by Mason Kelly following the second-generation racer's big accident at Ipswich.
It's been a tough rookie campaign for the 23-year-old, with twin finishes of 16th last time out at Bathurst representing his best results of the season to date.
Geoghegan's struggles add to a torrid campaign for Image Racing, with Jobe Stewart and Jarrod Hughes also mired down in 10th and 21st after both being in the top five in last year's points standings.
The last round move came with the blessing of Image Racing boss Terry Wyhoon, as the reigning Toyota GR Cup champion assesses his options for next year and beyond.
Geoghegan's one-off drive for Kelly Racing means that recently crowned NASCAR Xfinity Series champion Jesse Love will step into the ex-David Reynolds and Will Brown Erebus chassis that has been campaigned by Geoghegan this season.
"Max is pretty keen to have a drive in a Mustang, as is everyone at the moment, particularly the Tickford ones," Wyhoon told Supercars.com.
"I said to him if you wanted to go and venture down that road and see if the Mustang is that much better, so he's doing the last round with Todd Kelly.
"That was his call, and it played into our hands having that car available for Jesse."
Inaugural Supercars Hall of Fame inductee Ian "Pete" Geoghegan, grandfather of Max, was a five-time winner of the Australian Touring Car Championship, winning four of his five titles at the helm of a Mustang from 1966-69.
Geoghegan recently secured the GT4 Australia Silver Cup title at Hampton Downs in New Zealand, driving a McLaren for Chaz Mostert's Method Motorsport operation alongside Tom Hayman.
The Sydneysider's entry edged out current Dunlop Super2 Series points leader Rylan Gray's Mustang by just a single point.
