Will Davison has hailed the "really good" timing of a Shootout stunner in Sydney, with the veteran snapping a two-year pole drought.
Davison beat Ford rival Chaz Mostert by 0.0007s in an historic Boost Mobile Top Ten Shootout on Sunday afternoon.
The two-time Bathurst 1000 winner, who last took pole in Pukekohe 2022, jumped to sixth in the championship after Saturday’s night race.
Davison, who will turn 42 in August, is coming off-contract at the Shell V-Power Racing Team, and is planning to drive on in 2025.
Davison has been teammate Anton De Pasquale's match since 2021, when they both arrived at Dick Johnson Racing. To Sunday, Davison has 71 top 10s to De Pasquale's 66, and is five positions ahead in the drivers' standings following Race 15 on Saturday night.
Speaking after the Shootout, Davison hailed his team’s efforts, saying: "They're all tight margins these days, but really proud of that one.
"I just haven't been nailing my Shootout laps. Obviously wanted to be quick then, but just wanted to get the most out of myself, like I felt I did in qualifying.
"So, I was proud of that effort. The car came in beautiful, so I've really got to thank Rich [Harris, Race Engineer] and thank all the team. It's been a big turnaround from Friday for us.
"Haven't had a pole since '22, my first in Gen3. I won't lie, it feels really good. The timing's really, really good for me.”
Super2 champion and Davison’s co-driver Kai Allen is trackside with the Shell V-Power Racing Team in Sydney, and is determined to seal a main game seat for ’25.
Regardless, Davison — who has claimed a podium in each of the last six seasons — is determined to convert in the race, with the Shell Ford squad winless since Townsville 2023.
“We didn't change the car much from yesterday. We knew it was a solid qualy car,” the 561-race veteran said.
"We had strengths in the race, but ultimately we're still 18 seconds off the lead at the end of the race. So, we are going to make a few changes for the race because that's where the points are won.
"Either way, I'm proud of our effort here, but our eyes are obviously fixed on the race."
The Panasonic Air Conditioning Sydney SuperNight will conclude with the 51-lap, 200km Race 16 at 4:05pm AEST.
