The two-time: van Gisbergen's place in championship history

Champion-elect Shane van Gisbergen has become the 14th driver in ATCC/Supercars history to win two or more titles.

Van Gisbergen mathematically clinched the 2021 Repco Supercars Championship in Sydney after Sunday's Race 30 was declared a non-event.

The 32-year-old New Zealander helped Triple Eight Race Engineering to its ninth drivers’ title and first since 2017.

Van Gisbergen helped his squad clinch its 10th teams’ title with the Race 29 victory on Saturday night.

Just 25 drivers in over 60 years of championship seasons have won the drivers’ title.

He won the drivers’ championship on his first attempt as a Triple Eight driver in 2016.

Five years of near misses and finishing behind countryman Scott McLaughlin followed, with van Gisbergen runner-up in 2018 and 2019.

Van Gisbergen went to another level in 2021; to the penultimate round in Sydney, van Gisbergen had won 13 races from 28 starts.

The Kiwi became just the sixth driver in history to win 13 or more races in a season when he dominated the ARMOR ALL Sydney SuperNight opener.

He went one better on Saturday, before clinching the title and the Beaurepaires Sydney Cup.

The 2021 Repco Supercars Championship and Dunlop Series seasons will conclude at the Repco Bathurst 1000.
