Triple Eight rocked by pit lane penalties for Broc Feeney, Will Brown
Feeney was penalised over an unsafe release, Brown spun wheels during stop
Feeney, Brown started ninth, 13th for 200km race
Red Bull Ampol Racing's Saturday night at the DUNLOP Sydney 500 has featured a double dose of penalties.
24 hours after the team won on debut with its new Mustang, the 2025 teams' champions suffered dual frustration midway through the 52-lap race.
Broc Feeney and Will Brown were both penalised to the tune of 15 seconds, served at their second stops, over separate pit stop infringements.
First, Feeney was penalised over an unsafe release, when the #88 Red Bull Ampol Ford emerged in the path of James Golding's #7 CoolDrive Ford.
During the same pit stop sequence, it emerged that Brown had spun his wheels during his stop, incurring a breach.
When informed of the penalty, a furious Brown said over team radio: "How'd we do that?"
Feeney emerged behind Thomas Randle in effective 14th, with Brown effective 19th. Feeney recovered to sixth, with Brown 15th.
The chaotic pit sequence also saw PremiAir Racing rookie Jayden Ojeda lose a wheel.
The drama came under the control of the Shannons Safety Car, which was called after Andre Heimgartner's #8 R&J Batteries Toyota suffered a suspected engine failure at the exit of Turn 8 on lap 9.
Heimgartner brought his smoking car to a stop on the circuit, followed by what appeared a trail of oil.
