Andre Heimgartner engine failure sparks Sydney Race 2 chaos
Broc Feeney penalised, Jayden Ojeda loses wheel as Heimgartner Toyota expires
Macauley Jones also out of contention with damage
An engine failure for Andre Heimgartner has triggered chaos in pit lane during Race 2 at the DUNLOP Sydney 500.
Heimgartner pulled his smoking #8 R&J Batteries Supra over on the run to Turn 9 in the opening laps of the race.
It kicked off a dramatic chain of events that saw several drivers implicated in an action-packed pit stop sequence.
Notably, second-placed Brodie Kostecki dropped to fourth, while Friday night winner Broc Feeney was released into the path of James Golding. Stewards quickly hit Feeney with a 15-second penalty after the restart.
"It is what it is, we made a mistake," Triple Eight boss Jamie Whincup told the broadcast.
Down the order, PremiAir Racing released Jayden Ojeda with a loose right rear wheel, which came free as the rookie pulled out of the pit box.
The Ojeda wheel hit fellow rookie Zach Bates’ #10 Bendix Chevrolet.
During the Safety Car period, Macauley Jones also pulled into the garage with damage to ducts and the undertray after an earlier off.
Triple Eight’s frustrations extended to Will Brown, who after starting 13th, restarted 17th.
Pole sitter Anton De Pasquale restarted ahead of Matt Payne, Aaron Cameron, Kostecki and Cam Waters, with Ryan Wood sixth ahead of Feeney.
