The stats that put Triple Eight 'slump' into perspective

Much has been said about Triple Eight Race Engineering's current form, which has the team on a streak of six consecutive races without a podium.

It's the team's longest such dry spell since 2006, when Triple Eight went eight consecutive races without a top three finish.

After winning three of the first six races of the season, Broc Feeney has one win in his last 16 starts, and five podiums. Will Brown, the 2024 Supercars champion, has only two podiums to his name.

After Feeney's dominant Tasmania victory, both drivers missed the podium in Darwin and Townsville.

On one hand, the results show that Triple Eight is currently in a slump. On the other hand, when stacked against its rivals, it shows just how impressive Triple Eight has been over a long period of time.

What about everyone else?

Across the last 20 years, the 2006 run remains Triple Eight's worst, ahead of its current spell.

Its closest rival is Tickford Racing, which went 13 races without a podium. Under its Ford Performance Racing guise, the team also went 12 straight without a top three finish.

From there, you can really see the rollercoasters some teams went on. After taking over Kelly Racing in 2022, Grove Racing went 17 races without a podium as recently as the middle of 2023. It also went 15 straight in 2022, and across the end of 2024 and start of 2025.

Walkinshaw TWG Racing, formerly Holden Racing Team and Walkinshaw Andretti United, had a terrible run through 2017 and 2019. It went 29 straight without a podium across the 2018 and 2019 seasons, and only captured one podium — courtesy of James Courtney and Jack Perkins in Bathurst — in 2019.

Erebus Motorsport first joined the series in 2013, taking over Stone Brothers Racing. For all of the team's achievements, it is currently on its longest streak without a podium, sitting at 57 races since Gold Coast 2024.

PremiAir Racing, Blanchard Racing Team, Team 18 and Matt Stone Racing each had to wait several years before reaching the Supercars podium. MSR waited the longest, its Darwin victory in 2023 with Jack Le Brocq its first trophy in 169 attempts.

Dick Johnson Racing may again be a powerhouse with Brodie Kostecki, but it had its fair share of outs as it battled with a dearth of cash and talent. The team went 76 races without a podium across 2013, 2014 and 2015, and 69 races across 2011, 2012 and 2013.

And to think, Triple Eight's 'worst' streak in the last 20 years is eight races...

The points are still there

While the trophies aren't rolling in, Feeney and Brown are still scoring points, which is crucial to keeping its teams' championship hopes alive.

Only Penrite Racing and Tickford have out-scored Triple Eight across the last two rounds. To that end, Tickford has only out-scored Triple Eight by 15 points. Penrite Racing, though, has tallied 200 more points across the last two rounds, turning a 67-point deficit into a 133-point lead heading to Perth.

As mentioned, much has been said. Feeney said he "felt sorry" for his hard-working crew, while Brown defended his teammate given Feeney remains second overall. Craig Lowndes said Triple Eight's form is "hit and miss," while Mark Skaife insisted improvement is needed to mount a title challenge. Most surprisingly, Dr Ryan Story shed light on the struggles his arch-rival team faces.

Perhaps most telling were comments made by Triple Eight Team Manager Mark Dutton, who said after Townsville: "It’s not fun but it’s real.

"The reality is that you try things that don’t always make the car quicker. At least the new championship format allows you to have a bigger swing because you can have worse rounds.

"In the past you always had to be more conservative."

Broc Feeney and Will Brown will look to halt their team's form slump at the Bosch Power Tools Perth Super 440 on July 31-August 2.
