Mostert's major narrative shift in 251-point swing

Chaz Mostert has marched from a position of relative danger to one of relative comfort in just two rounds, as the reigning champion continues to shift his season narrative.

Across the opening six rounds of his championship defence, Mostert has danced around the Finals cut-line, even falling below it following his controversial Christchurch clash with Brodie Kostecki.

What's more, is after his Darwin DNF, Supercars.com tipped Mostert to fall out of the top 10 in Townsville — a suggestion the Toyota star took umbrage with.

Since Christchurch, Mostert has executed a 251-point turnaround relative to Finals, turning a 23-point deficit into a 228-point advantage. The heavy lifting was done in Townsville and Perth, with only Matt Payne, Cam Waters and Broc Feeney scoring more points than Mostert.

Finishes of fourth, fifth and sixth may not have delivered the silverware Mostert wanted, but it left the Walkinshaw TWG Racing star feeling content with a "good bank of points."

“Another weekend here in Perth, this year with the Toyota GR Supra, we had three pretty consistent results with a P4, P5 and P6," Mostert said.

"We are there or thereabouts, unfortunately we didn’t get any trophies this weekend, we just didn’t quite have the pace to compete with the front five or so guys.

"Overall, a good bank of points, and we are off to QR next round which has been a happy hunting ground for me in the past."

Teammate Ryan Wood, meanwhile, was caught out by another mechanical issue that rendered the Kiwi a non-starter on Sunday. Where a podium and big points day was in the offing, Wood instead recorded his third non-score of the season.

Wood was a best of 181 points clear of the cut-line after Tasmania, but has been unable to improve his position across the last three rounds.

"Overall, we can be proud of our efforts this weekend, back on the podium," said Wood, who did finish second in the first race of the weekend.

"It felt like I was back in my good rhythm, so I am really proud of what we achieved. We will come back stronger at QR, it’s getting tight in the top 10 so today really hurt us, but we will come back.”

Both drivers are set to take part in a Toyota engine test at The Bend Motorsport Park on Friday.
