Supercars legend Russell Ingall is relishing the chance to be involved in Garry Rogers Motorsport’s Bathurst wildcard.
2005 Supercars champion Ingall and former teammate Marcos Ambrose were trackside at Winton this week as GRM rolled out its wildcard Camaro.
Veteran James Moffat and rookie Nathan Herne will steer the ex-Triple Eight Chevrolet at the Mountain across October 8-11, in GRM’s first start since 2020.
GRM has, true to the style of the late Garry Rogers, done its wildcard its own way, from running retro liveries, using famous numbers, and applying itself with typical humour and larrikinism.
Critically, though, the team is leaning on Ingall and Ambrose, who combine for three Supercars championships, two Bathurst wins, 55 race wins and 735 starts.
Ingall has personally mentored Trans Am racer Herne in recent years, and amid a relative absence from the track, was happy to answer GRM Director Barry Rogers’s call.
Ambrose, meanwhile, has been hands-on in motorsport in recent years, from administration to running his own team, while mentoring daughter Tabitha.
Two-time Great Race winner Ingall was proud of GRM’s efforts, claiming the car ran “faultlessly” across the two days at Winton.
"I'm actually pretty excited about being involved with this program, heading back to the Mountain and appreciate Barry inviting me along for the ride,” Ingall wrote on social media.
"There's been many changes within the sport, a lot that I don't agree with, and there is definitely plenty of ‘Hollywood' kicking around, but what I love about GRM is it reminds me of the early V8 Supercar vibe within the team — no palm trees but heaps of passion and a willingness to have a big swing.
"So good to spend time with Marcos, who I am sure will be all over this Bathurst deal with his attention to detail, it's going to be a massive asset.
"The car ran faultlessly and really impressed by Nathan and Moff on getting to grips with the Gen3 car so quickly and seem to be right on the money.
"There's been so much positive feedback online and fan support which has been just fantastic to see.
"I reckon the Team GRM Valvoline pit garage will be pretty popular over the weekend, and trust me, our drivers wont be hiding in their transporters, they'll be out meeting and greeting, so make sure you come and say hi over the weekend.”
Track action at the Mountain will commence on Thursday October 8.
