Kai Allen returns serve at Ryan Wood over bizarre clash
Wood criticised Allen over incident during qualifying
Allen claimed rival's move was "a Woody thing to do"
Kai Allen has returned serve at Ryan Wood over their bizarre qualifying clash, claiming the Walkinshaw TWG Racing driver's move was "risky."
Allen sailed to second in Friday's betr Darwin Triple Crown behind winner Cam Waters and Penrite Racing teammate Matt Payne, with Wood falling from sixth to eighth.
It came after a strange collision between the two rising stars in Boost Mobile Qualifying, with Wood diving down the inside at the final corner before both cars returned to pit lane.
There was contact between the two cars, Wood remonstrating in the car. Later, the Kiwi claiming Allen was "just wobbling along" and that he "just turned down."
When asked about the incident in the post-race press conference, Allen said: "I was just trying to get back to the pits safely after doing my first lap.
"It was quite strange. I was obviously finished the lap. Will [Brown] was going quite slow in front of me, and I was trundling into the lane, just sticking the gap behind there.
“Found it quite weird that he dove into the last corner when the pit lane's just in front of us, and all he would've done is got behind Will, and then we would've followed.
"At the end of the day, he's trying to get back to pit lane, so was I. We were on the same strategy to go again."
Allen, who sits two positions ahead of Wood in the championship, claimed the move was a "bit risky."
"Stuff happens, and that's sort of a Woody thing to do, I guess," Allen continued.
"Anyway, I'll definitely check, at that point in time, I wasn't even looking at my mirrors. I didn't expect to get passed in qualifying... and yeah, I got a car in the side of my door during qualifying, so it is what it is. I don't really care.
"Just a bit of a shame because I had a beautiful exhaust pipe on there, now it's all bent. So that was in qualifying, not even the race, so sorry, boys."
Saturday Supercars action kicks off with Boost Mobile Qualifying at 10:45am local time/11:15am AEST.
