Ryan Wood and Kai Allen collided awkwardly in Race 17 Qualifying
Wood attempted to overtake Allen at final corner
Kiwi unhappy with slow in lap speed of Allen
Ryan Wood has vented his frustration and confusion at a bizarre clash with Kai Allen in Boost Mobile Qualifying for Race 17 at the betr Darwin Triple Crown.
After setting a banker run in the opening phase of Q2, Wood was on an in lap, and pushing to get back in to pit lane in order to get two timed laps on his final green tyre run.
Wood caught the back of Allen approaching the final corner, and attempted to dive up the inside at the final corner, renowned as an opportune place to make a pass in racing conditions.
Contact was made, however both cars weren't hindered by damage, as they finished the session in sixth (Wood) and seventh (Allen).
The move immediately caught the eye of Garth Tander in commentary: "That all seemed a little bit unnecessary, they're all coming back to pit lane anyway. You don't get any points for getting back to pit lane first.
"It's a potential for contact, exactly that. You can wave your fist around, but I don't understand why you need to get back to pit lane three seconds faster than the car ahead of you."
A bemused Wood then claimed that he was entitled to make the move, as he was concerned he wouldn't get two timed laps in on his final run.
"He was just dawdling along, and I knew how close we were going to be to get two laps [on our green tyre run]," said Wood post-session.
"He was just wobbling along, and I tried to get past him before the pits and he just turned down, so I don't know what that was about.
"And he had to press on the out lap and hurt his next run, because he was going that slow on the in lap.
"Yeah I don't know, it is what it is."
Race 17 of the 2026 Repco Supercars Championship commences at 5:00pm local time/5:30pm AEST.
