Broc Feeney, Ryan Wood collided in costly lap 1 clash in Adelaide finale
Feeney spun to rear, Wood hit with 15-second penalty
Will Brown jumped Feeney for second in points as #88's engine lost power
Will Brown has offered his opinion on the controversial opening lap collision between Ryan Wood and Broc Feeney, with the outgoing champion siding with his Red Bull Ampol Racing teammate.
The championship battle was flipped on its head just six corners into the final race of the year at the bp Adelaide Grand Final, when Wood tried to force his way through a gap as Feeney attempted to hold on to second after a poor start.
Wood managed to get a slight overlap, but tagged Feeney into a spin as he was squeezed against the inside wall, with the Kiwi copping a 15-second penalty for 'departing the standard of a competent driver.'
It's a move that has divided opinion among the Supercars paddock. Jamie Whincup called the move "grubby," and Ryan Walkinshaw put the blame back on Feeney.
Whatever opinions there may be, the facts are that Feeney's race truly fell apart when his engine developed a misfire, losing so much performance that he finished a lapped 20th after flying through the field.
It was a heartbreaking end to a brilliant season for Feeney, and one that outgoing champion Brown didn't believe was fair.
The 2024 Sandown 500 winner also believes that more Finals battles could end with major consequences.
"Not sure the play was on at the start there with what happened, I think that's pretty disappointing to see," said Brown in PIRTEK Victory Lane.
"But obviously in the end Broc ended up having some dramas there.
"I think it opens up the games for next year with what happened, and I'm looking forward to that. Yeah, disappointing."
Whilst not agreeing with the move, Brown was quick to congratulate Mostert, who became a first-time champion yesterday.
Mostert became the third first-time champion in as many years, and could potentially give Toyota a dream debut with the #1 on the door in Sydney next year, though Mostert is yet to confirm whether he will run the number.
"Chaz deserves it, he's done a fantastic job throughout his career and he deserves to be a champion, so congratulations to him," Brown continued.
"He's a great friend of mine, but it's sad handing over the #1, but also it's disappointing to see what happened today for Broc, I think he really deserved that one."
