Brodie Kostecki and Chaz Mostert involved in wild Race 13 collision
Contact sent Kostecki on wild ride through infield grass, Mostert penalised
2023 champion lost championship lead, JR Trophy to Broc Feeney
Brodie Kostecki and Chaz Mostert have offered their perspectives of their wild penultimate lap collision in the final race of the ITM Christchurch Super 440.
Following Ryan Wood's heartbreaking late engine failure, it set up a three lap dash to the finish, with Kostecki needing to pass Mostert to steal a last-gasp Jason Richards Memorial Trophy win.
On the penultimate lap, Kostecki launched down the inside of Turn 2, and rattled into the #1 Toyota, however Mostert decided to show his displeasure and return serve.
The pair clashed twice on the run to the high-speed 'Pothole' corner at Turn 3, with the second touch sending the #17 Ford spinning wildly through the infield grass.
Worryingly, the 2023 champion came back across the road, sending the pack scattering as Kostecki was left sitting awkwardly just off the racing line in a cloud of dust.
Crossing the line in fourth, Mostert would be slapped with a 30-second penalty, dropping him down to 17th, one spot ahead of Kostecki, who lost both the championship lead and the JR Trophy to Broc Feeney.
Kostecki was the first to front up on broadcast post-race, quipping: "It was just an interesting thing, I seem to have a real issue with that corner and being in the dust, so it's interesting.
"That's how it goes, the officials have made their call on the penalty, and that's about it. I don't really have much to add."
Kostecki then explained his side of the initial contact at Turn 2, a move that he felt had pulled off fairly, if forcefully.
"I actually got a fair way up the inside, I think he saw that I was coming pretty late and tried to turn in, but I was already up a fair way.
"So that put me up onto the grass there, and I didn't run him off the road on exit or anything, I gave him a car [width]. I'm not about that.
"And then the rest happened, so interesting. I'm glad I didn't take out any other cars obviously, and I believe there's a flag post there as well, so glad nothing serious happened.
"That's the way it goes sometimes, sometimes you're the bug, and sometimes you're the windscreen."
Mostert then responded on the broadcast, and expressed remorse for the final outcome that saw Kostecki sent on the wildest ride of the weekend.
"First of all, not the outcome I wanted from that," Mostert said.
"Brodie was pretty adventurous down there at [Turn] 2 and bowled me wide, so I let him know I was pretty upset, but that wasn't my intention for sure.
"We made wheel-to-wheel contact, and it just spat me sideways, and then the last one whiplashed Brodie off, so not ideal."
Mostert was also seeking Kostecki for a conversation as he spoke on broadcast, however also admitted that he might have been in no mood to talk.
"I'm trying to find him, but I'm pretty sure he probably doesn't want to talk to me right now."
