A three-way fight to be crowned rookie of the year in the 2025 Dunlop Super2 Series is set to play out at the bp Adelaide Grand Final.
Whilst one of Tickford Autosport's four-pronged attack of Rylan Gray, Lochie Dalton, Nash Morris, and Reuben Goodall are guaranteed to add a driver's title to the teams' championship Tickford clinched at Bathurst, it's looking highly likely that a Holden driver will claim the rookie crown.
Entering the final round of the season, Triple Eight duo Jackson Walls and Ben Gomersall, as well as Eggleston Motorsport rookie Cody Burcher have emerged as the three leading contenders for the rookie crown.
For Walls, this could represent his sole chance at picking up season silverware in the development series, with the 23-year-old being promoted to the main game next year in the SCT Motorsport/Triple Eight Mustang.
Whoever claims the rookie title could also be the top non-Tickford car in the series, with Walls currently fifth, Burcher eighth, and Gomersall ninth. Second-year driver Cameron McLeod and third-year driver Brad Vaughan are the interlopers in that pack.
Jackson Walls
The leader of the rookie standings since the third round of the year in Townsville, Sydneysider Walls has been rewarded with a plum main game drive in Triple Eight's new SCT Motorsport customer entry next year. Whilst some have questioned the move, the potential has been plain to see on occasion. Most notable was Race 2 in Ipswich, when he aggressively fended off a fast-starting Nash Morris from pole position, and duly converted to his first race and round wins. He will be eager to finish his one-year Super2 apprenticeship with at least one more win.
Cody Burcher
Walls' closest rival in the rookie race is reigning Super3 champion Cody Burcher. In what has been a torrid campaign for Eggleston Motorsport, Burcher has often been the shining light, outperforming reigning Super2 champion Zach Bates. Burcher would likely be leading the freshman charge had he not been caught up in the opening lap melee at on Saturday at Bathurst. Whilst he hasn't yet claimed a podium finish in 2025, he has challenged for silverware several time, including claiming pole in just his second start in Sydney.
Ben Gomersall
Brought back into the race after both Walls and Burcher's Saturdays came to a dramatic halt in Bathurst, Gomersall enters the final round just 63 points behind his Triple Eight teammate. 2025 got off to a surprise start with a round podium at Sydney, however his season hasn't hit the same heights since. A consistent presence around the fringes of the top 10 since his strong start, if the two Commodores ahead of him strike trouble again, Gomersall could sneak up into the lead of the rookie standings for the first time since the opening round.
The outsiders
Two other drivers remain in contention for the rookie of the year crown, namely Bailey Sweeny and Matt Hillyer. Whilst long shots, any trouble for the trio ahead will bring them both back into play.
