Super2 returns with a bang as Ipswich records tumble

The Dunlop Super2 Series returned to Queensland Raceway for the first time in six years today at the Century Batteries Ipswich Super 440, and they didn't waste any time in setting a ferocious pace.

Local star Cameron McLeod topped the opening session of the day on a 1:09.7240, breaking Scott Pye's 2012 practice/qualifying lap record that had stood since 2012.

McLeod was one of five drivers to dip below the marker in the opening session of the day, with Kiwi Ayrton Hodson becoming the first driver to set a sub-1:10s lap in Super2 competition in the same session.

However, as the track rubbered in and the sun came out, to dry the tarmac as well as heat up the track temperature, Practice 2 was blisteringly fast..

No fewer than 11 of the 23 drivers in the Super2 field dipped below the morning benchmark, with a further five setting times that were under Pye's benchmark that had stood for 13 years.

Given Pye was driving for Triple Eight in 2012, it was somewhat fitting that Jackson Walls would end Friday as the one to beat, with a time eight tenths faster than the old record, and almost half a second up on McLeod's morning time.

With two Boost Mobile Qualifying sessions to come for the dual 40-minute races that complete Round 4 of the 2025 Dunlop Super2 Series, there is every chance that the record will be further lowered following a very fast Friday.

Today's Super2 action begins with Boost Mobile Qualifying at 9:00am AEST, before the opening race of Round 4 begins at 2:45pm AEST.
