Broc Feeney has the final say before Boost Mobile Top Ten Shootout
Near-miss between Will Brown and Chaz Mostert in dying moments of session
Mostert confronted Thomas Randle in pit lane after climbing out of #25 Mustang
The scene is set for an epic Boost Mobile Top Ten Shootout, with Broc Feeney firing into the 2:04s in the final practice session of the 2025 Repco Bathurst 1000.
Shootout runners attacked the final part of the session with vigour after a late red flag, with Feeney firing in a 2:04.9698s to make a claim for his maiden Great Race pole.
While there were smiles on the #88 side of the garage, those in the #1 camp held their breath as Will Brown took evasive action behind Chaz Mostert heading into Murray's Corner.
Brown got away with it, finding the grass and spinning out, while Mostert returned to clock the second fastest time of the session. However, Mostert was fuming with Thomas Randle, confronting the Tickford Racing driver post-session.
Teams cycled through race runs, pit stop practice and Shootout simulations throughout, with Lee Holdsworth first into the 2:06s aboard David Reynolds's #20 TRADIE Energy Chevrolet.
Nick Percat fired in a 2:06.1935s to put the #19 Bendix Chevrolet on top, but it was short-lived as Brodie Kostecki threw down a 2:05.4176s in the provisional pole-winning #38 Shell V-Power Ford.
While the top 10 drivers had an eye on the Shootout, teams still managed to hit trouble in the lane. In the first 10 minutes alone, Triple Eight struggled with a front right brake change on the Brown/Scott Pye Camaro, while a faulty door latch kept the Kai Allen/Dale Wood Penrite Ford stranded.
On track, James Golding dodged a major bullet, surfing the #31 PremiAir Chevrolet through the run-off into The Esses before The Dipper. Just minutes later, he clipped the exit wall at Forrest's Elbow. Craig Lowndes, meanwhile, fired off at The Chase.
At the 27-minute mark, Mostert lit up the time sheets across the top of the Mountain, and moved from 15th to second, albeit 0.4s down with a 2:05.8531s.
With 20 minutes remaining, primary drivers began stepping into their cars in a bid to make some noise before the Shootout. Mostert marginally improved to a 2:05.7589s, as teammate Wood threatened to unseat Kostecki. The #2 Mobil 1 Truck Assist Mustang went fastest over the top, but lost time elsewhere to fall 0.261s short.
Randle went even quicker in Sector 2, and demoted both WAU Fords with a 2:05.6476s. Feeney then jumped from 17th to fourth with a 2:05.6969s, before Waters pieced together a 2:05.3052s to put 0.112s on Kostecki.
With seven minutes remaining, Mostert returned and went fastest in Sector 1, and did a personal best in Sector 2. However, Mostert aborted his lap, leaving questions over how much the #25 Mobil 1 Optus Ford has in reserve.
With six minutes remaining, pit lane equipment was left on the #100 Penrite Ford and came loose exiting pit lane, triggering an untimely red flag. The car was immediately placed under investigation for an equipment breach.
The stoppage set up a bumper six-minute run home, with Shootout runners at the fore. Feeney powered up and down the Mountain, nailing a 2:04.9698s, with Murray an impressive fourth with a 2:05.3673s. Mostert rebounded from his skirmish with Brown and went second with a 2:05.1161s, while Kostecki bailed out of his final lap.
The #8 R&J Batteries Chevrolet of Andre Heimgartner/Declan Fraser, which ended up 27th, will be also investigated post-session over an alleged pit lane breach.
The all-important Boost Mobile Top Ten Shootout will commence at 5:05pm AEDT. Live coverage can be found live on screens of the Seven Network, 7plus, Fox Sports and Kayo Sports.
