Cam Waters opens Adelaide account by topping opening practice
Top five all non-Finals Drivers, Chaz Mostert sixth ahead of Will Brown
NASCAR star Austin Cindric 23rd out of 25 in solid opening to Supercars cameo
Cam Waters has stolen the Thursday honours from David Reynolds at the bp Adelaide Grand Final, as Chaz Mostert led the championship contenders.
Tickford Racing ace Waters clocked a last-gasp 1:19.5764s to unseat Team 18 veteran Reynolds by just 0.006s after 30 uninterrupted minutes of practice on the Adelaide streets.
Walkinshaw Andretti United star Mostert was sixth and the lead driver of the title fight quartet, with reigning champion Will Brown seventh, points leader Broc Feeney 11th and Penrite Racing rookie Kai Allen 18th.
Allen had the biggest scare of the lot, baulking to avoid Andre Heimgartner as the Brad Jones Racing Chevrolet exited pit lane, before shortcutting the Senna Chicane.
NASCAR star wildcard Austin Cindric, meanwhile, was 23rd ahead of Erebus Motorsport's Jack Le Brocq and PremiAir Racing's Jayden Ojeda.
"We're pretty happy, rolled out, the car was pretty good. We tried to learn some stuff and then put a tyre on it at the end," Waters said after the session.
"I just got a bit of traffic and stuff, but the car is pretty pacey, so good start.
"It is what it is, Sandown weekend, and 50 grand up for grabs tomorrow night, so we'll go for that, and try and win some trophies and finish the year strong."
Reynolds was first into the 1:19s with a 1:19.9750s, and returned serve to lower his own benchmark to a 1:19.5831s.
Anton De Pasquale (1:19.8145s) and Waters (1:19.9157s) slotted in behind as cars return to pit lane, but the first runs weren't without their scares.
Notably, Brodie Kostecki grazed the concrete at Turn 8, while Cooper Murray took evasive action while looking down the inside of Cindric at Turn 9.
As cars returned to the track, Kostecki fired to second with a 1:19.5884s. Through 25 minutes, neither Brown or Feeney had recorded a single kerb strike. That's not to say Feeney wasn't pushing, though, the championship leader catching a wild slide through Turn 7.
Into the final minutes, Brown and Feeney both recorded kerb strikes as drivers continued to push the limits. In the final minutes, Waters displaced Reynolds with a 1:19.5764s to move to the top.
Teammate Thomas Randle jumped to fourth with a 1:19.7750s, which immediately became fifth as De Pasquale improved. Behind him, Mostert jumped to sixth, just 0.017s ahead of Brown.
All told, the 25-driver grid recorded a combined 86 kerb strikes at the Senna Chicane, with Murray, Ojeda and Nick Percat triggering the loop six times. Kostecki, Brown, Feeney, Will Davison and Cindric recorded one strike each.
Supercars return to the track on Friday morning for Practice 2 at 10:30am local/11:00am AEDT, followed by Boost Mobile Qualifying at 12:40pm local/1:10pm AEDT. Tickets for the event are on sale.
