Chaotic end to qualifying delivers Broc Feeney, Chaz Mostert front row
Brodie Kostecki, Cam Waters spin off after failure for Andre Heimgarter
Kai Allen seventh, Will Brown 12th after missing Q2 berth
A chaotic end to Boost Mobile Qualifying and another shocker for Will Brown has taken the shine away from a record-breaking performance by Broc Feeney at the bp Adelaide Grand Final.
Feeney is in the box seat for Friday's $50,000 race after recording the best time in Q2, which was punctuated by a car failure for Andre Heimgartner's #8 R&J Batteries Chevrolet.
Debris left behind by Heimgartner's car saw Brodie Kostecki fire into the barriers, and Cam Waters off the road. Both drivers were up on Feeney's time, which held firm.
Feeney will start alongside chief championship rival Chaz Mostert, with title contenders Kai Allen and Brown seventh and 12th.
"It's so cool to be back in Adelaide, obviously a really special weekend," said Feeney, who broke Scott McLaughlin's record of poles in a single season.
"To think that we've got 17 is something truly special, to break the record is obviously incredible.
"I just want to thank the whole crew behind me, Marty [Short, engineer] has done a fantastic job, I wasn't too happy last night and he turned the thing around.
"Chuffed to get 17, but all eyes are on the road ahead. We've obviously got an important race this arvo, but then setting up for a big weekend.
"These laps around here are bloody fun, having a lot of fun out there. Stoked to tick over 17 and get a new record."
Thomas Randle kicked off the 12-minute Q1 with a 1:20.2635s, before Matt Payne fired into the 1:19s with a 1:19.8788s.
Feeney jumped to the top with a 1:19.7572s despite locking up into the final corner, with Waters slotting in behind with a 1:19.7574s. Mostert (1:19.6178s) then moved ahead before David Reynolds (1:19.5487s) jumped up.
Mostert quickly returned to the top with a 1:19.2658s ahead of a final flurry of times. Into the final runs, Brown and Allen were 16th and 17th. Brown recorded a kerb strike, putting the reigning champion under pressure.
Brown jumped into the top 10, but a final flurry of times dumped the reigning champion to 12th. Feeney improved to seventh at the death as Kostecki went fastest of all with a 1:19.0075s ahead of Heimgartner, Ryan Wood and Anton De Pasquale.
The top 10 returned to the track for a 10-minute crack at Boost Mobile Pole, and Kostecki marched on with the fastest first sector. Feeney was first across the line with a 1:19.7241s, before Kostecki blew everyone out of the water with a 1:19.1919s ahead of Wood (1:19.3451s), Mostert (1:19.3728s) and Waters (1:19.7189s).
All drivers bar Waters and Cooper Murray came into the lane, with the former losing time in the final sector. Murray, meanwhile, moved to fourth with a 1:19.5419s.
The field returned to the track as the weather continued to close in, with a number of cars turning their windscreen wipers on. Mostert charged past both Penrite Mustangs on the run to Turn 8 in a bid to find clean air with three minutes remaining.
On his first flyer, Feeney was down on the first sector, but closed out a 1:19.2918s. Wood moved just ahead with a 1:19.2481s, before Feeney turned up the wick through Sector 1.
Waters displaced Kostecki with a 1:19.1780s, as Feeney and Kostecki pressed on. Feeney nailed a 1:18.9640s as Mostert moved into second, before Heimgartner's car expired on the run to the final corner.
On fast laps, Kostecki and Waters were caught out. Kostecki flew into the barriers, while Waters slid off the road. Waters will start third, Kostecki fourth, and Heimgartner 10th.
NASCAR star Austin Cindric will start his first Supercars race from 24th, ahead of Shell V-Power Racing Team veteran Will Davison.
